Phase Linear 400

I just noticed that this 400 has the 400II heat sinks . The power transformer has 400 as a model number, the serial # 10919. Anybody ever see this ?

As far as I know, when it comes to serial numbers, besides Dean, Ed Blackwood is the AUTHORITY on these questions. If you would post a pic, we could get you an answer.

I have to back up Don here. I run my 700's VERY hard. I like concert level SPL's and never run them continously at 0db or more without some fans like in the pic.

I'm looking at a temperature sensing fan controller and 12 volt fans. It's going to be a few weeks before I know anything.

Heres a few quick pics of the heat sinks .Maybe an upgrade.

Nope, standard later model Ser I. The 4 fin models were the early ones. the Series II's had a thicker 8 finner.

"The cure to this is 2-1N4148 , back to back, polarities reversed and soldetred to the foil side of the board on the leads of C6."
I need to see this upgrade, can you draw me a diagram of it? thanks

How bout a pic?? The large caps in the back are the 470 uf 50 volt Nichicon Muse in the C6 position. Gives great improvement in the low frequency response.

I see ,thanks . I have the filter cap kit from White Oak its the 33,600uf (2x16,800uf) . Do I need any inrush "protection" here on the AC line?
The bridge rectifier is a KBH2502 , 25A 140v/200v our article author suggest a 40amp 600v . Which doesn't seem like a bad idea . I'm still researching the output transistors . I'm leaning toward using new ones.

It appears this board was repaired at one time. The resistor above the right side trim pot has been replaced . It looks like the original burnt up.

I believe white oak has some aftermarket pc boards which converts the two big main caps to four main caps which total more than the original capacitors values of the original ones.

I was looking at these, and was just about to buy when I read the description carefully..... these kits will not install in the early versions of the PL-400 that have the main caps mounted directly on the side of the chassis via big round capacitor clamps.

Since that's what I have, I need to go look for replacements that have the same (or nearly the same) dimensions as the originals. I will start looking in earnest after I install the relay kit that I purchased from Don, but if anyone has already found a source I would be very interested in hearing about it. :)

They say their LED meter light kit upgrade won't work for me, either. :(

Thats good information to know if one was looking to purchase a old PL 400 and hoping to upgrade it. I guess one needs to make sure they find a later one to restore. All my PL audio are the series II's. But I really like the PL 700b's.

Q5 and Q10 (40327) are not original. The resistors burnt up only after Q5 and q6 failed. Likely this is the result of cascaded failures of the output.

Cornell-Dubilier makes a 18,500 uf 80 volt computer grade cap that fits the original clamps. Could you post a pic of the metyert illumination on your series I, I'm somehat familiar with em.

The later 400's have a pot metal plate about 1/2" thick between the transformer and the chassis. The capacitors are taped to the plate inside the chassis with double sided tape. The stiffness of the transformer leads help keep the caps in place.

I don't think the capacitor mounting makes much difference. The early version has plenty of room inside for a variety of different caps. It's the cost that makes it prohibitive. Do not be tempted to buy cheap caps off EBAY. All I've ever seen are at least 15 years old.

You can turn a 700 Series II into a 700b with the White Oak board.

That's a rough lookin board. Swap out the 25 amp BR with a 35, that's plenty. No additional inrush protection is needed. It can handle it just fine.

If you replace outputs, use MJ 15024 as drivers and MJ21194's as outputs, a good combination.
