phase linear - dual 500 series 2, diagnostics plus updates and some thermals

Is there a shop in your area with a CNC machine, or laser cutter?
If so, it would be easy enough to add more vents. It is kind of crazy the vents aren't larger.

txf image shows a steady increase, internal temp will obviously be hotter.

not something thats going to cool down quickly, plus having no ventilation makes me wonder how much the inductance is affected and in turn the saturation threshold. or if the heat increases or decreases secondary voltage which will have an effect on the dc rails. an interesting thought experiment to say the least.

some basic info:

a few more thermals of the assembled chassis.

point of view reference.

therm-f-2.jpeg
max temp lower than actual due to increased camera distance (beyond 6 inches).

amp in high-z mode (high resistor temps). low-z mode cools down to around 200f or slightly below. big improvement vs original 3w hot spots.

converting the txf from E-I core over to a more efficient toroid and then creating a power supply enclosure for the toroid plus some filters and the usual wiring umbilical might help control internal amp heating. venting the chassis with a few more holes seems like it would have minimal effect/improvement in comparison. either way this monster of an amp seems to be up and running as the owner wanted, potential modz have been noted for future reference.

and now to finish up a pioneer spec-4 that had a blown channel.

although the top cover is not shown, it is an example of the other extreme i.e. too much venting. which allows lots of contamination to enter. smaller txf dual mono power supply definitely helps distribute heat plus lots of space for bigger power caps (future modification).

some info/calculator on toroids:

another thought would be to delete the linear power supply and dial in a switch mode (smps) supply since there would be plenty of physical space for high wattage design.

Not a bad idea to play with. Switchers are getting better all the time.
My all tube headphone amp has one. I used one in a 2 channel VU meter
With Russian bar graph nixie tubes, and an active subsonic filter I built.
All are very quiet. I have a couple Crown pro audio power amps with switch mode power supplies powering a Class D amp pushing a descret output stage for 275wpc into 8 ohms, 500wpc bridged. It doubles into 4 ohm.
the amp has great specs too. It defenetly makes the amps a lot lighter.
