Philips CD-60 how good a cd player?

Picked up a Philips CD-60 at a yard sale for $5. What is good about the player? I know it has the DAC everybody wants. What are the mods that can be done to make it better? Any idea for service manual and schematic?

I have one I picked up recently in mint shape with remote. In stock form it's pretty good but after I modded it, very, very good.

I followed this thread for guidance.

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-source/201057-marantz-cd-50-cd-60-tda1541-cdm4-19-a.html

The Marantz and Philips are identical.

After reading up I decided that the mods listed in that thread would be better in the long run than converting to NOS.

Here are the mods I did in order.

0.5- damp the CD clamp with blue-tak
1- remove variable output and headphone circuits. Unloads and removes noise from the PS.
2- replaced output coupling caps with 10uf films instead of BP electrolytics
3- put some damping material on the clock
4- replaced opamp with gold plated sockets and used LM49720
5- replaced diodes in PS with schottkys
6- re-capped PS before and regulators
7- installed IEC inlet and use power cord with built in noise filter (surprisingly effective at reducing noise floor)
8- replaced local opamp decoupling caps
9- replaced local decoupling caps for TDA1541, SAA7220, SA7310
10- new DEM clock cap
11- replaced the SMT decoupling caps for the DAC (on underside of PCB)
12- Added additional transformer with reg's for independent PS to feed the SAA7220 and SAA7310 chips
13- Added damping to the chassis
Still to do, order and install a better clock kit. I have a tap on that new transformer ready and waiting. Probably go with the $40 Valab clock on ebay.

Each mod was a definite improvement. Some more discernible than others. The cumulative effect is that it is now the best sounding CD player I have owned yet. Shortly after finishing the mods I sold my Rega Planet2000 as it was shamed.

Hint: if yours has any problem reading discs or skips, inspect and relube the ball bearing in the clamp puck. The old grease drys out and wreaks havoc with the drive for some reason. Mine was mint and guessing hardly used, but would skip on some discs. After addressing the puck it hasn't had a problem reading any disc since.

BTW, the CDM4/19 drive is the fastest loading I have ever seen. Virtually no lag selecting tracks. Loads almost instantly.

You can find the Marantz CD-50 service manual at HiFiEngine I think. If not I have a digital copy I can send you. I think the only real difference between the CD-50 and CD-60 are parts selections. Layout is same.

Thank you. Will check out the web site. What are you using for an amp, speakers? Recapping my mission 737Rs today. Changing the caps sounds good . Have to recap my NAD 3140,4020 yet.

Currently...

CD-60---> DIY tube preamp--->Onkyo M5060r--->Sylvan Elite speakers.

Previously....

CD-60---> DIY tube preamp--->Acoustat servo amps--->Acoustat Model X electrostatic speakers.

I just found one at GW today. So how do you like yours? Did you do any mods to it?

Did not do any mods to it. Really like it. Can hear detail I couldn't hear with the sony player. And that is on the headphones.

I just picked up a nice example of a Philips CD-60. Could use a pdf of the User Manual for CD-40, CD-50. CD-60, or CD-80 if somebody has one to share. Thank you in advance.

Btw, I'm just getting back into CDs because I got lazy and listened to MP3s for the past several years. This CD-60 has been a revelation - hearing details in tunes I've heard 100s of times that I never noticed before (even on CDs back in the day).

Not to dissimilar to my Marantz CD-65 apart from layout, I haven't done any mods except for last night, I removed the out put coupling caps and took the signal from where the input legs of the original caps were and then through a pair of 1uf Andyn Copper Caps, I removed the remote/digital input RCA board at the back so I could put ETI sockets there for the output from the caps. took the ground from near the base of the old RCA's to the grounds on the ETI sockets.

This alone has transformed the sound for the better, much better. I'll maybe look at taking the signal from after the first op-amp at some point, adn maybe do the NOS mod and some of the other popular things others do and recap the original electrolytics also..

Yesterday I took the signal from after the first half of each opamp and have gotten a further increase in positive performance, I should have done this ages ago. With the TDA1541 and using these caps from that signal stealing point It's close to when I was spinning records.
I'd suggest it for anyone that is comfortable with a soldering iron, there is a guide on doing this on the lampizator site, titled 'Snip It - modifications for the begginers'
