Pioneer HPM-100 Recapping Walkthrough

Hey guys, purchased a set of HPM 100s last summer and I'm going to start poking around in them this spring. I know this post is from 2007 but is the Word doc guide still available?
 
Another longtime lurker here. Have a Marantz 2270, an 8260 SACD player, an older Pioneer turntable with a Shure m97xE cartridge, and a pair of HPM 100's, have owned most of the gear for 10 years now and it gets used on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. Recently a buddy brought over his Ascend speakers and comparing them back to back with my Pioneers, the highs on the HPM's were a little muddy, and may have had some phasing issues. Hard to tell. I have never had them apart. Is recapping them going to make a noticeable difference? Does anybody have the pictures saved from the first post in this thread?

Thanks, that is really helpful. It looks like there is some debate on the 3 capacitors. Do the resistors wear out as well, or do people typically replace them just because it's apart?
 
I only did the 4 caps. I didn't know anything about replacing resisters.. FWIW, it did make a big difference in the sound. Before it was really harsh. And after it mellowed it out quite a bit and the highs were really enjoyable. The one thing I recommend, and it might just be me, is to set them on a solid base. I built stands that were 14x14x14 and they were filled with sand. 100 pounds each. Really tightened up the low end. No more booming. Just a smooth, solid, steady, driving bass. :music: Milk crates just don't cut it.
 
I did the same. I friend built stands from oak boards and I filled them each with 50 lbs of play sand from Lowe's. Made a noticeable difference in the bass for the best.
 
Would it be possible / permitted to post a couple pictures of said stands for others to check out? Or does that require another/different thread?

saw this service provided by someone selling new cross overs , and saying that they will work for both MPH100a and 100b, my question is this true ??

"The plates are for the HPM-100A's (50w, 100w max) version but they are compatible with the HPM-100B (100w, 200w max) versions as well. I have both HPM-100A's and HPM-100B's so I speak from experience, they are the same components."
 
Hi, all. Slipstream55 here. Just ran across this thread. I have a set of HPM-100 I got back in 2006 that I am ready to re-cap.
