Pioneer HPM Speakers

Got my pair of HPM 100s over the weekend for $100. Needs new veneer, but the drivers are in good shape. Need to get some stands to lift these off the floor so my neighbors won't complain. But very happy to have these classics!
 
With stands, you'll hear better sound. See if you can have the tweeters pointing to your ear height, a nice 9-12" with 3 degrees tiltback works fine here.

My buddy has a pair of Pioneer Sx4G, that he is offering me. I was wondering how much they are worth, and are they good speakers?









 
Thanks for the great info Dr. I have a pair of HPM-60's with the foam surrounds and stamped baskets. I read on another post that these were to be refered to as Series One HPM-60's and the newer speakers with the treated cloth surounds and cast alum. baskets as Series Two. I have never before seen or heard of HPM-70's. I did a refoam of my speakers that I got for only $10 at the Goodwill store. They are so amazing. They are so great that after an A-B test I just went ahead and sold my other speakers.lol
 
PJstone, last time I looked Pioneer still sold the woolfers for the HPM 1100 series and Gibsonian I don't doubt what you say about the brittleness of the polyblend material used for the HPM 1100 woofers but. If you keep them away from direct sunlight that helps a ton. And the one small crack I got in one of mine - (from an impact) I used fingernail polish strengthener on. Thats been 20+ years ago and "knock on wood" no troubles since, cept for refoaming done about 10 years ago.

Yeah, there is much more upside to the brittleness than there is downside. Great sounding drivers. I'm a big fan. Even cracked they can be repaired.
 
One of these I think:

HPM 200
HPM 1100
HPM 150/1500

Haven't heard any of them, so I cannot say. I would bet on the 1100.
 
Those would be my picks, too, except the 1100's would be at the top of my own personal list. I heard them years ago and had a friend that had a pair growing up. Loved them. Wish I could come across a pair fairly close and reasonably priced. Hell, any of those for that matter.

I own HPM-150's, HPM-900's and HPM-1100's. Have had them all since new from wayyyyyy way back when. I would love to find a pair of the HPM-200's. I've never personally heard them, but my understanding is that they are the best of the best HPM's. Side note on the 900's, I've done side-by-sides of the 100's and 900's and the 900's have all of the good things of a 100 and very little of the bad. Same "character" but much smoother. Another observation: The 150's are great, the 1100's are better but different... perhaps a bit more mid-range and brighter highs, but the 150's paired with the 1100's as A/B pairs are a fantastic combo when driven with an amp with enough headroom to handle them ( I have them running with an SX-1980, and they really would benefit from a bit more oomph but sound great with it )

Probably not the first person to say this on AK, but I wish Pioneer had carried forward the nice HPM-100 enclosures to the HPM-900.

More oomph than a SX-1980? That's a lot of power!

I have a set of HPM-1100s that I really love (I drive them with a SX-9500II). They are big and fat but also reach very high. Interestingly, they don't reach as low as my JBL L150s (nor are they as flat), but they have a bit more mojo to my ears (whatever that means).

They are my primary speakers, and I have L150s, L150As, 4411s, and a bunch of other smaller speakers.

I have had a pair of 1100s for about 3 years now, drive it with a Sansui G8000. They are ran flat, and tone controls are bypassed on the recevier. Only way to go.

I also have a pair of JBL L-166s, and although good with articulation and imaging, not as deep as the 1100s. I wouldn't expect them to be, due to the cab size difference.

Yes, but understand that I'm running the 1100's on my 1980 A/B'd with a pair of 150's... into that combined load ( somewhat less than 3 ohms ) the 1980 is straining a bit at higher volume levels. At lower levels, giving everything plenty of headroom, it's fine. Check that, not fine... glorious, great synergy.
