Pioneer PL-L1000A Thread

If one uses the original head-shell and the proper offset, the stylus, by design, follows a line passing through the plater’s center.
It is 0mm offset. The original overhang gauge is marked at 49mm. If you have an original Technics gauge, you could mark off the 50mm.

I can buy into your theory. White lithium grease was commonly used on plastic parts for years, and everytime I had to clean off that aged ear wax I found the plastic part it was on to be brittle. Another example; I used to buy bargain lawnmowers that had plastic wheel hubs on steel axle shafts, they would get a shot of oil every now and then. Within 3-4 years the hubs would become brittle and crack or break, once I started using Superlube (ptfe, non petroleum-based lube) that problem stopped occurring.

That's all I use on plastic for lubrication now.



Also agree; ozone, plastics, and time have taken it's toll on many things I’ve owned.

A mounting gauge to set the stylus tip at the exact tangent line. There is a prescribed distance from the head shell collar to the stylus tip that varies from cartridge to cartridge, and sometimes aftermarket stylus examples.

In post #121 I stated the distance for proper overhang on the 1000 tables to be 49mm. I physically measured both of my overhange guages that came with each brand new 1000 I purchased. 50mm would put the stylus tip of any and all cartridges beyond the platter centerpoint. I know, one mm, big deal, but it is the difference between being at platter center or being beyond the center.
As also suggested, the geo-disc does an excellent job in helping with cartridge/headshell set up on this table, other tables it varies from table to table. I suggested it because I find that the 49mm overhang guages are getting quite hard to find for the 1000 and 8000 tables.

The original headshell is not necassary to achieve a proper overhang (offset) on the 1000 series tables. I was not enamored with the sound quality of my original 1000 headshell and mc4 cart. I replaced the cart with a different manufacturer and still was not impressed. I swapped the headshell on the new cart and never went back. My son experienced the same issue on his 1000 and 1000a.

This is what I've been using for headshells on my 1000 tables. My son uses the black version on his Japanese PL-1.

Is this really precise?!

I'm thinking about a tool to check the Technics SL-10 and SL-J2 needle placement. It will be something like plastic ruler with a hole for the spindle, and a line going exactly though the center of that hole.
I'm going to somehow fix the platter, put that my ruler on it, lower down the tonearm (with the prescribed tracking force) - and check that it is possible to find such a position for that ruler (clockwise|anticlockwise, without any further adjustments) when the needle tip travels exactly along the line (passing though the platter's center).
That ruler, ofcourse, will be of the exact thickness as an LP.
 
Yes. it hooks over the back of the headshell and in theory, being transparent, the stylus should line up at the crossmark looking at it from the underside of the tool. I agree that it is pretty "production line" looking as a tool would go but it came with the turntable and I have managed to keep it all these years. I saw a Pioneer version on Ebay that was not transparent. That looks to me to be more difficult to use.
 
Here is one that was in my Ebay watch list. Looks like someone 3d printed their own version. Looks like they labeled it 49.5mm. Correction: It appears to say 15.5mm but that makes no sense unless the line width would be the theoretical width of the headshell? https://www.ebay.com/itm/293389495403

I have had a nasty headache the last couple of days so didn't get much done. I should be back in the groove so to say shortly.

Only off as far as mine is concerned. The groove will go around the protrusion of the headshell but is not wide enough to go around the locking collar of the tone-arm
 
I seriously doubt that this rude thing is usable for such precise apparatus as the tangential tonearm.
  1. the needle tip should be exactly on the radius under the recommended tracking force
I'd rather avoided it even for a pivital tonearm setup...
