Pioneer SP-BS22-LR, the real deal or hype?

I've really been thinking about getting a pair of the Overnight Sensations. I notice they (and the Pioneers) are rear ported.
Due to limited placement options, I was wondering how much of a minimum distance they need from the back wall to sound their best.

I have a pair of BS-21's. The $50 I paid for them (Newegg) makes them IMO a super bargain.

I think what needs to be considered with respect to the OS's is that they come in knock down unfinished cabinets. Everyone is not gifted with woodworking skills or owns the clamps necessary to build the cabinets.

Mine sound great in corners on tall stands and about 18 inches from the wall. You would probably be ok at 12 inches.
The woodwork on the OS is easy with a natural stain finish but the crossover assembly could be a challenge but what a great learning experience.

Thanks Poultry, 18" is very doable. No problem with the crossover either. Their wiring diagram had me scratching my head:confused: but the schematic explains it nicely.

I have a pair of the Pioneer 22's. I wonder if anyone has done a direct comparison between them and the Overnight Sensations or other less expensive speakers for that matter?

I have a pair of them in their original packaging stored in my garage. For a while I was considering performing the tweeter swap/crossover modification to them, but ultimately I've lost interest in them. Not for me either.

You had a pair of these speakers just hanging out in the box in your garage?

I have spider webs and dried leaves and some wood cut offs in my garage.

What is Christmas like at your house?

It gets worse, there are stacks of gear out there. There's a pair of rosewood veneered KEF Reference Series 103/4 speakers awaiting restoration, 3 or 4 turntables, a 2 piece Magnavox tube console, at least 2 subwoofers and God knows what else. Christmas is usually uneventful unfortunately since mom passed away, she was the glue that held the family together.:(

I owned ( past tense ) a pair of 22's and rest assured the Overnight Sensations are a sizable upgrade. Superior detail and bass with the OS.

The love affair with the Pioneers reminds me of the Insignia craze of a few years back. Folks bought them like hotcakes, enjoyed them for a short while and moved on.

I'd rank the the three inexpensive bookshelf speakers I've owned as follows:

1. Overnight Sensations
2. Dayton Airs ( AMT tweeters )
3. Pioneer BS-22

Mine are still quite awesome I must say. Maybe they're not broken in yet.
:beerchug:
Mine are sitting in their original box inside my garage. Color me unimpressed. They were broken in plenty, they just didn't make the cut. I suppose if I hadn't heard dozens upon dozens of other speakers of all price ranges that I could have been taken in by the hype. They are what they are, decent sounding speakers for not a lot of money, nothing more.

Agreed.

As someone on this forum once asked, "how do we know what is good if we don't listen to what is less good?"

I haven't heard any of those, but I am shocked at the sensitivity rating of the Overnights. You'd think they could have done something to get it up to 85 or 86.

That said, I love the small form factor. 9 inches high with a nice wood stain? Very nice.

Well gee. I've been watching the price of the Pioneers on Amazon and they haven't budged off the 129 price. I've also been watching the price of the Overnight Sensations, and today they moved off the 120 for the first time in two weeks. They went up to 138! Strange behaviour 2 days away from Black Friday if you ask me, but what do I know? Still waiting…

Where I am located pairs pop up used from time to time. I got mine for $40. Busy metro area though. Millions of people.
