Does anyone know if it is common for Playstation 3's to develop the problem of skipping while playing DVD's? If so, is there an easy fix like cleaning or ????

You can try cleaning the lens. You have to take it apart, and probably remove the disk clamp to gain access. Then take a Qtip with a small amount of diluted Windex or dish soap and rub the glass, carefully. It is not quite as delicate as a phono stylus but it is not rugged. Then take another Qtip and dry it. They try it.If it still skips the LASER is bad. they get junked up on the inside sometimes and also they just get weak. Not so much weak but I think their output pattern is not right anymore and it FUBARs the focus and tracking.

Older vid games used regular IDE drives but that may have changed. Get a picture of the plugs on the back, if it is a standard IDE or SATA drive you might be able to get a replacement for like $15 on amazon or whatever, put in two plugs and four screws.

But don't count on it.If it has the newer Apex style drive in it, it is a little bit harder to change, you have to deal with a flat cable to the LASER assembly. That is easy to break.

Another thing, I have access to drives that are pretty much standardized except for the tray and the front bezel. One might fit. but I need pictures first to see what kind of drive it is. Usually they are replaceable, it is just getting the replacement.

However, my guess is that you have a SATA drive with modified mounting. That means buying one online from either the bay or Amazon most likely. You can't unmodify that mounting without globs of glue n ****. Too much PITA.

The PS3 is fairly simple to take apart. There are many 'how to's' online that show you how to take it apart. You can clean the lens and if it doesn't help you'll have to buy a new front load BR drive. Use q-tips and 91% rubbing alcohol to clean it. New PS3 BR players are available on the internet. Amazon has them for ~$50. Online auctions are much cheaper by about half.

If you have a slim:

If you have the original fatty, which congrats for it surviving this long, anyway, search the same sight for that tear down.

Thanks JURB and 67dylan. If I find some time I'll take it apart. I have the 90+% isopropyl alcohol for the cleaning provided I can get to the lens. Pretty sure mine is the slim version, so the link is very helpful.
