The poly switch is like a circuit breaker to protect the tweeters from being over driven by a low power amp or receiver. The poly switch heats up and opens to cut the power to the tweeters.
I removed them for my crossover rebuild to keep the signal path cleaner. I'm not worried about over driving them but if you're heavy handed with the volume control you may want them in service

If you bought a 84 Mustang GT (just as an example) that hadn't seen a tune up since the day it drove off the lot but had been driven for 26 years, would you not give it a tune-up and replace the plugs, wires, distributor, etc, etc to get it back closer to what it once was? Or would you just drive it because it worked fine as is?

Big speakers, big sound, neither very inefficient nor efficient. Light on bass to some people. 200+ watts does well with them. The SDA-SRS model isn't as valuable as the 1.2 and 1.2TL models so don't get visions of huge dollar signs without some research.
Its not about the dollars, its about finding a keeper. I have has a ton of speakers over the years and I'm looking for another keeper. Looking at a pair of duntech black knights, focus 20 20, and the polk sds srs. Want a great sounding speaker and one that can play very loud at times, but not a cerwin vega type of speaker
I have a pair of 2.3s which is a step down from the srs's. The srs's are slightly more efficient than the 2.3s and I know my 2.3s will rock the house and then some with a 300 watt amp. The mc2300 should be a great match up for them imho. Be prepared to do a recap and it's not for the faint of heart as these crossovers are fairly complex due to the sda effect. But get them recapped and set up properly in the right room and you'll have yourself one fine sounding pair of keeper speakers.

Unhooked it's just like the average speaker. The connecting cable is what gives the wide and deep soundstage.

The SDA-SRS is a good speaker, but they weren't in the same price or class range as those other two you mentioned. Polk's success was making excellent speakers using consumer methods and sorta bargain-bin drivers. For reference a really nice SRS pair would be worth somewhere in the $800-1500 range. People often will recommend replacing all the tweeters with new Polk silk domes to smooth out the somewhat abrasive treble.
The cable is needed for a decent soundstage. The rest of the audio performance is pretty much the same.

Great to see an SDA thread. I have the 2A's and aspire to get some bigger ones. Personally, I think people understate how magnificent they are. They are in a league all their own and are usually well worth the low amount you usually pay to get a set. I love mine and it's almost hard to imagine speakers being any better. I am pretty sure mine are all original and they sound amazing as they are.
I picked up a pair of 2A's from a fellow AK'er locally and they were really cheap, they replaced my Boston Acoustics A200's in my bedroom system.

I love my SDA SRS 2's....fully refinished and rebuilt with the RD0 tweeters, Solen caps and Mills resistors, XLR connects/12ga wire for the Interconnect, new terminals, and all new Polk replacement drivers for the MW6509's that they had for awhile but apparently don't now. They sound absolutely amazing and it's a shame that they are wrapped and sitting in a closet right now. Sigh... But that's another story...

Hi - 1st post, joined a while back - thought this Polk thread would be a good place to jump in.
I still have my 1988 pair of SDA SRS 2 bought here in Houston. I'm currently looking for a good receiver to pair it with, really would like an old Yamaha CR-3020 from the 70's golden SS era...any recommendations modern/vintage ? I know these particular model SRS 2's are highly regarded. They sounded thunderous back then.
The grills have had some cat-itis over the years, is refinishing them a cottage biz ?
