Polkkubiki

Onepixel, you haven't heard your speakers yet. Or maybe you have, if your music collection consists of nothing more than Zamfir's (Master of the Pan Flute)
Greatest Hits. Anything more demanding in your collection and I'd venture to say you are pretty familiar with the sound of your Marantz 2015 clipping.

I've used a Sansui AU-D11 & 8080db, Pioneer SX-1050 & SA-9100, half a dozen Marantz and a bunch of others with the SDAs. I hear them just fine. The SDA-2s are one of the most efficient speakers I have.

While it may be losing something in the bottom end with the 2015, the volume at 12 o'clock gets near uncomfortably loud.

So what am I missing?

Many moons ago, when I bought my first pair of SDA1's (I'm thinking '83 or thereabouts), I had a Technics SU-7300 integrated at 41 wpc, and it drove the Polks, but not further than around the block in 1st gear- wasn't long before I moved to Denon separates.

I actually set the 2015 and SDA-2s up for my daughter who plays loud pounding rap. The Brauns weren't cutting it. I've listened to Zep, Dire Straits and some Diana Krall just to see what it would do. Did just fine.

So do you listen to Zamfir on your SDAs? :scratch2:

They will play loud with low power but what you are missing is transients, peaks etc. that you might not even know are there. Put a big amp on them for awhile not to blow the doors out but to just listen. You will hear more depth and have more headroom for much cleaner bass and those sparklie highs.

If you can't tell the difference between a 15 watt amp, no matter who built it, and a good 200 watter then the big one is broke, your ears are bad, you are in a 4x4x4 room, or you just do not care. Not a thing wrong with "Don't care" except if that were the case you sure as hell wouldn't be posting on an audio forum. . .

Now it may be true that the differences might not be enough to justifie the expense to you but to the vast majority it is what we are all after. . .upgrade, upgrade. . .

Let it out. Let it ALLLL hang out.

I retract my statement. I know nothing. His daughter has more audio knowledge than I possess. It's understandable. She has all that knowledge in her genes.

Now your not getting all upset are you?

My daughter has no knowledge of audio at all. I just said she likes to play loud rap and from my experience the 15 wpc does just fine with the SDAs. It's not distorting or clipping. It probably would if I cranked it all the way. It's rap, not jazz where you want to hear a tight stand up bass. And as for me I'm still learning and keep an open mind.

Cheers

Would just like to inject my G@*D@&&%t. Been looking for speakers like this.

And they were only 30-40 minutes away from me.

But alas, the piggy bank has no rattle to it right now. :tears:

But still, I would like to have had them for one of my future dream setups.

Thanks for letting me break in :smoke:.

Your speakers look like that 1pixel? Seems you are just making the recommended wattage; 485 more to max ;)

"I know NOTHING!"

Schultz

They're four ohms nominal, so maybe that 2015 is doing 18-20 watts into them. Ten watts of headroom. Sonic nirvana.

Yup those are the ones I have, except mine have the SL-2000 tweeters. I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to specs. I see where it says recommended associated amplification 10 - 500wpc. I never knew that. Could you enlighten me on the recommended wattage of 485 more to max? I realize there can be a huge improvement in using more wpc. But in this case I wasn't after that.

Thanks!

Hey Zebra keep looking I think you will be happy when you finally get a pair.

Cheers!

The sonic improvements are the bonus in the equation. It is much easier to damage speakers with too little power than too much power. That is the reason for trying to adhere to the recommendations of the manufacturer.

I know I've stated this before, but here goes again:

Bob Carver went to visit a mad scientist friend of his. The guy had something like 12 or 24 (I think it was 24) 200watt power amps daisy chained together. He was using them to TRY and accurately reproduce the sound of a pair of common household scissors making one "snip". When viewed on the oscilliscope, it was obvious that 2,400 watts, or 4,800 watts (I'm sure it was the latter) was not enough to do that. There was clipping.

Still think your 2015 isn't clipping to rap music?

!

For 99.99% of the people who use these speakers a good 200wpc amplifier not a receiver no matter how powerful (a couple exceptions) will do fine. That 485 number doesn't mean continuous. . .you try running 500 watts steady state and you will ruin those Polks. . .200 steady state will make'm sick. . . but those momentary peaks may well go upwards of a thousand watts. Most good 200wpc amps have enough headroom that you wont have a problem unless you like to dance with your earplugs in. . .drunk to boot. . .

Just don't get stupid with the volume knob and listen, really listen for distress. . .

Mine were wonderful using 2 Adcom 300watt mono blocks. . .

Now for the purists among us . . .they do build some mighty powerful amps if you want to go by the letter of the law. . . just thinking bang for the buck and from my personal experience. I also owned a 1050 and a 1250 at the time and I played them on both but they were nowhere near as satisfying as with a 555 or 2 565s. . .

Thanks guys for your patience and holding my hand through this. I guess I'm going to have to find an amp in the 200+ wpc. class and give it a try.

By the way what receiver exceptions would you recommend?

Cheers
