I am using a Fairchild 412-1B as my primary turntable. They were produced in the late 50's to early 60's. The one I have was a kit, I got it as new old stock, the plynth was partially complete and it had no tone arm. It is a two belt drive system, single speed. The plynth is made from 5/4 Hickory, finished with an oil finish. The tonearm is an SME 3009 improved. This is the only tt I have had that I can stomp my foot on the floor and not effect the tracking, it will however pickup the thump that is transfered through to the stylus. The upper plynth is floating on the sub plynth on small springs centered with bearings.

Nope, and actually in the pics she needs to be cleaned.

The only trouble I had was that it had sat so long the grease in the bearings and the bearings of the motor had dried up. I took them apart and cleaned the old grease and dried oil out, over 40 years old, and replaced it with more modern lubricants.

I also used cork as a mat on the platter rather than the original mat. And I forgot to mention the cartridge is a Pickering XSV-3000.

At the moment, the other Garrards just include a 401 awaiting restoration and a GT10. However, going back to my early 20s, i used to have about 60, yes that's SIXTY different Garrard models in my collection. Sadly, my grandmother died, I consequently lost my storage facility (her house!) and they all gradually went. I am considering re-starting the collection one day but not just yet - other things need to take priority at the moment!

Interestingly, there are quite a few Garrard models I see on US Ebay that were never sold over here (SLX-3, Zero 2000, 990B to name a few). I'd love to pick up one or two of those but have the same problem as you - namely the postage price and sellers who refuse to ship outside the US.

As to the 301, it was actually bought new in 1964 by my uncle, who treasured it until he eventually stopped listening to vinyl. He then very kindly passed it on to me and I've been doing the treasuring ever since!

Sorry to hear that your collection had to go. I'd like to have a 301 as well but I think my TT collection is getting a little difficult to find space for and I still have a couple that I haven't refurb'd yet. Everyone seems to want the gray grease bearing but I like the looks of the cream better....but of course would go with a gray if I found it.

I know what you mean about shipping - it was expensive even with surface and now that's no longer an option. I've never had a problem between the US and UK using USPS/Royal Mail. I've transshipped before so if you find that perfect table, I could make the trip to the PO.

It's nice that your 301 has family history. Makes it even better. :thmbsp:

Rega calls it Cherry. A little more red than regular cherry, but I agree that it looks kinda sharp. The white acrylic of the platter makes a nice contrast too.

The frosted platter as a contrast to the red cherry and black is good. It's got a clean, nice aesthetic.

I really like the cherry trim on your Rega. It's surprising how much that enhances the appearance. It makes my plain old black one look rather, well, plain...

I have a buddy who is into audio, but into transformers (yeah the toys) a whole lot more, I reckon he'd get a bit of movement over that!
