I wasn't really looking for bugs so much when I found this one while I was out shooting flowers. The 90mm macro being used positions you too close to many bugs, which leave quickly when you're in their space. I'm talking about you, flies, bees and butterflies. Autofocus is hit or miss on items this small.
I was using a 70-300 Sony zoom last year for bees. I'll do that again soon. Raining today.

I shot with my Sony 70-300 G zoom today. It does ok, but is not really the best solution for macro/flowers/bugs. Something else I noticed was that the silicone diffusers I use on the flashes mounted on the lens are creating a fog effect in the images due to the sides of the diffusers aren't shielded and they're located forward of the front element. I'll have to cobble something together to prevent that from happening. I'll probably just take some of the black flocking paper I have and attach that to the diffusers.

There were a few bugs/bees, but not very many. I was hoping to see more.
I'm beginning to understand the value of a telephoto macro zoom lens. When I saw them mentioned in discussions on a photography forum, I couldn't quite grasp why that would provide at the time. Now it's beginning to make sense.
With the 70-300 the minimum focus distance is 3 feet (90cm), so you're positioning the camera quite a long distance from your subject. For flowers that's not really an issue, but for insects I have to crop the shots heavily. That means the bugs/insects/bees aren't going to be as detailed as I would like.
I think Laowa has a 180mm macro lens. I'll need to determine if I think that will work, and confirm it's an AF lens as well. Manually focusing on bugs that move quickly isn't very effective.
