Just got a Sony a7RV. I put an adapter on my 50mm Canon FD macro lens and took a 1:1 picture of a butterfly wing




This is a crop from the original image that was made using the 4 exposure pixel shift function. I also tried the 16 exposure pixel shift and found that it didn't seem to offer much more sharpness, but reduced noise quite a bit, and came with a significant file size penalty.

I'm not sure if this is a bumblebee or another type that looks very similar. I have an example of the later in my collection of dead bugs, although this is not that example.

These bees present a challenge in that they're relatively easy to find, but it's very difficult to get a shot with any detail of the face because it's totally black.

I think we've been getting smoke affected sunsets for the last week or so, and have NOAA predictions for smoke over the next day or two. Last year I found that smoke tends to wash out color and doesn't make for a very good sunset overall, and there was a lot of smoke from Canadian fires at that time.

Walked out this morning to see all the smoke/haze in Northeast Ohio coming from the Canadian fires. (You can look directly at the sun; which is not a good thing!).

Woke up to the same thing here in south-central Wisconsin. Visibility might be a mile, and it's just as bad now (almost 2 PM) as it was when I woke up around 5:30 AM.

I was going to try to get some shots of the crescent moon tonight. It's supposed to be aligned closely enough with Venus that I can get them in the same frame, or so the theory goes, but with the smoke being like it is, it's highly unlikely I'll see any of it. There's not much cloud cover here, so the sunset could be interesting.

Just shot this a moment ago. I estimate we have maybe a mile of visibility here. The thing that really separates this smoke from what we experienced last year is that this is low in the atmosphere and you can smell it. Last year's smoke was further up.
