I've had the good fortune to own both of those. I had a Mac c28 for a while and I really don't have anything bad to say about it. I enjoyed it's stay for the 6 months or so it was my main pre-amp. Plenty of features and had a nice fat analog sound to it. I currently use an ew marantz 3600 and probably will till I'm done listening to music. Yes I'd have to say overall I much prefer the 3600. It's a very nice sounding full featured pre-amp that has ended my quest for a pre-amp that will stay in daily use. A C28 would make for a damn nice back up to the 3600. You really can't go wrong with either model but my favorite is the 3600 hands down.

I didn't have the good fortune of listening to both - but I do own a C-28 and a Marantz preamp. However, the Marantz is an Esotec SC-6, so it might be a bit fancier than the 3600.
I have the Esotec in my main system, as it sounded better than my C-28 with my than setup. However, Once I moved the C-28 to the home office system, it sounded better than it did in the main system - guess its a synergy thing.
I personally think they are suited for different types of music: the C-28 has a fuller sound and is better suited for Jazz, Blues and classic, while the Esotec is better suited to rock and pop.
I personally would have listened to both if possible.

I own a 3600 but I've never heard it (it's in the queue) and I'm looking at a busted Mac to add to the pile, or possibly to take the place of the Marantz. :scratch2:
