In my neverending quest for 70s silver face bliss, the adventure continues.

There was a post in BT for a somewhat local unloved Pioneer SX-1010 with more than a few operational & cosmetic issues. This was my first purchase off BT since my status was updated to subscriber more than a year ago.

As you may know, have much love for all things 70s stereo related, and this was a chance to get into a unit that was arguably the first shot fired in the 70s power war. With 100 watts per channel at 20 Hz @ 8 Ohm - the SX-1010 was a game changer for sure.

The birth year of the SX-1010 coincides with mine = 1974. My patient though was a very late production unit with a serial number of "VL" = December 1975. It has some nuances that are untypical of the early models.

Over the last three years or so, I have rebuilt so many units but have always found the Pioneer equipment had exceptional build quality and always responded great to recaps / rebuilds. SX-1250 (2), SX-950 (1), SX-850 (1), SX-750 (1), and SX-727 (1). The SX-727 was a lower wattage unit that showed me early Pioneer gear (prior to the SX-xx50 line) were worthwhile. In fact many folks here - in the know - feel that the SX-1010 is one of the best sounding Pioneers ever built.

The patient was in non-functioning state with front glass busted, no top cover, missing knobs and switch covers, busted power toggle, speaker switch 'A' non-functioning. I would consider my 1010 a "barn find" with some light corrosion and definitely a basket case; however, I do enjoy testing my limited skills and patience that non-working units present.

Recommend retaining the original outputs = as you will not find replacements with similar specs in the same package (TO3).

My unit was like a box of chocolates in regards to outputs... one side had 2SC1079, SYL ECG280, SA679 R, SYL ECG281. These were working - but looked rough. The specs are similar to MJ15024G/MJ15025G (HFEs actually higher on new MJs than old replacements = similar MHz and 16A vs 12A). I used 24G/25Gs because I had inventory here.

The other channel had NEC 2SD287B & 2SB539B... which were in better physical shape and had similar or better specs than the originals or what I could replace with. Elected to retain these on that channel. Some folks don't like to mix outputs as a preference, and I am usually in that camp; however, the NECs in the one channel were retained.

If you are going to replace outputs = here are the recommended replacements (better HFE).

(needless to say I am disappointed that I missed a good pic of all those beautiful RED WIMAs on that board - unless you have done one of these style rebuilds, you have a lot going on between the parts, lists updates, testing, and thinking ahead).

All the pots where routined with D5 and followed up / flushed with F5 later.
 
Lighting Upgrades - LEDs

Appreciate the green glow that original incandescent yellowish / orange bulbs display with the blue dial and meters. However, for me I like the look of bright white LED on the original dial, meters, and indicator lights.

Straight recap. Will say it again... many folks worry about recapping tuners. Bottom line if the tuner is aligned, refreshed caps will not degrade the tuner's performance (just the opposite) = especially in regards to those Sanyo aluminum caps.

Really nice job! Did you try swapping the cases for the relay? You can typically take the new relay out of it's case and replace with the old case for correct attachment to the receiver. Some don't fit though.
