In need of much love... recap, new relays, and new trim-resistors.

How many total hours do you think you have invested in your recap project?
I am not fast... this is my hobby. It’s not a race. Was not working well initially = flaky VRs with high bias.

Cleaning = 2-3 hours
Building List & Order Caps = 4 hours
Disassembly = 2 hours
De-Oxit = 2 Hours
Recap = 10 Hours
Repaste = 2-3 Hours
Modify Lamps = 2 Hours
Cleaning PC Boards = 2 Hours
Adjusting Bias = 1 Hour

~30 Hours+

I have good desolder gun and iron = really the only way do it. Makes it 1000x easier.

This SA800 is more difficult compared to others I have done but not impossible.

The vinyl covering needs to be changed to veneer - which I might do in the future.

Finished product always is fulfilling and worth the time. Honestly, the challenge of restoring and the process is very fulfilling, and at the end these vintage units respond well and sound pretty amazing.

Problem lies in the end = just cannot part with them. I have never sold a receiver or Speakers I have rebuilt.

Just awesome so roughly 40 hours all in all I know how investing time is with projects.... But in my opinion you're pretty quick of course you have quite a bit of experience this isn't your first .....
It'd be fun to have a friend like you that I could spend time with doing my Technics sa 600 and still pay you for your time expertise and experience.... I'm pretty good at soldering and have played with this over the years simple replacement of finals and such in transceivers nothing extensive like what you've done though... It would be fun to redo this sa600 just like you did the 800 of yours.... Maybe someday I'll run across somebody local like you..... Even though I doubt that that is possible these days

What is interesting to me is them red caps that you used to replace the old round ones that is something new to my eyes never seen that style squarish cap....

Let me try to address your response:
Small Red Caps:
Small Red Capacitors = WIMA Film Capacitors
Most People I Find Use Film Capacitors for Caps Under 2.2 uF
I Like WIMA = others may suggest different brand

Thought it might be fun to rebuild
Like challenges and thought what the hell
Much reading and many youtube videos later bought Hakko Desolder Gun and Iron
Got a good meter = Fluke (a friend for life now - couldn't imagine functioning without it)

Majority of my success is having the right tools
Safety is key here - you should build a dim bulb tester (few dollars at HD) = you could kill yourself inside one of these things.

Not sure a cap coupled receiver rebuild was the best direction for cutting my teeth
Mouser, HiFi Engine are your friend. (schematics are important)


Findings:
What I learned = Sansui 800 Bada$$ little receiver & change old biasing variable resistors EVERYTIME
Plenty of people here want to help and support folks who want to learn and save the vintage equipment
Change one capacitor at time.
Don't Rebuild until you fix / identify the original problem (if one exists)
Test receiver after each board (not always possible) that way you don't end up 10 miles away from home without pants on
Cost is always the labor not the parts or tools = buy good tools (thank me later)
If you think you will - you probably will... don't be scared to try (what is the worst thing that can happen) not fix a $100 receiver
Am just an average guy = so if I can do it, pretty sure you can too with the right mind set

Just an awesome job and this kind of attention to detail is rare these days I bet not too many experienced technicians are this thorough when doing this kind of work for money...

Kind words... thanks. Just finished a Pioneer SX-750. Turned out just awesome. Gifting to one of my employees / friend. My SX-850 turned me on to the SX’50 line. Should finish my recently acquired SX-1250 this weekend.

Hello Super Noob. I have tried setting the bias on a Technics SA-800 according to SM instructions with no success. Seems to be an odd way of setting the bias. Is the SM correct? Or is there another way to set the bias? Thanks.
