Pure i-20 iPod dock

Auto hack?

For those who own the i20, do you think the iPod or iPhone will stay in the dock while driving? I'm thinking of hacking it to use it in my car. I can pretty easily build a 12V to 7.5V power adapter (even as simple as a linear regulator), and come up with a clever mechanical mounting solution.

I recieved my i-20 last week. The jury is still out for the follwoing reasons.

1. It seems to be finicky in regards to when and how the itouch 3gen I have is mated. You have to get the sequence just right or the ipod will not recognize the the base at all. It took a while to determine the right sequence now that I have it figured out perhaps it will be adequate.

2. No support for my 5th generation IP video. I knew this going in... sure would be nice to be able to use this device in an "anolog only mode" however.

3. The remote control sucks. I realize this unit is cheap but i'd have paid a little bit more for a decent remote. Has anyone used a programable universal remote with success? I have not tried it yet.

4. The remote control interaction with the apps is a bit unpredictable and flakey. This is not pures fault. I don't think they can consider every ap out there. Works ok with Music, Pandora. Not so well with Media Link Player Lite (is there a better dlna player for ipod touch?). I haven't tested with iHeartradio but assume volume only since this is live radio :).

5. Because of Item number one if you power off the itouch in the stand and then power it back on the unit will not sync up with the base. Thus you can only put it in standbye mode. Not sure how I feel about this.

On the good side I like the looks and feel of the unit. Sound is excellent.

After I live with it a while I'll report back further impressions.

For what it's worth, the remote that comes with the Apple dock also sucks. You'd think they would not include buttons that have no function. About the only functions that work are volume and pause.

I have not had this issue with the Touch 1G, iPad 1, or my iPhone 3GS that I have tested it with. If you do not have this problem with other docks (in other words, if you are sure the Pure has the issue), you may want to see if you can exchange it.
 
Good thread. I have an iPhone 3GS on order and I am very interested in using a dock with digital out.
 
After living with it for a week or so. Comments in line

Now that the ipod remains on the dock when not in use there really isn't any reason to power it off. There for this sync issue is not a problem. It syncs up perfectly as long as you just leave the ipod on or in standbye mode.

Nothing to add. The video is now up-stairs in the old doc. Don't really need it in this doc anyway as with itunes sharing there is no longer any need to use the Video downstairs.

Still sucks but i'm getting used to it. I haven't tried a programable remote to replace it with yet.

in the process of playing with this doc I discovered Itunes home sharing (I know I must have been sleeping) I no longer need Media Link for DLNA as the home sharing interface is leaps and bounds better than the DLNA interface and I can finally start streaming apple lossless. Anyway the issue is practically solved as well.

I feel fine about this. no problem any longer.


Over all buying this DOC (along with finally learning about home sharing on itunes) has brought my quest for easy to use, affordable, and quality Digital streaming goals to a close. I"m a very happy camper. I may even buy one for upstairs.

The CD players are now going to be relinquished to nostalgia duty :) Same for FM tuners. With all the great streaming from Pandora, and other internet sources the FM tuners never get turned on! The CD's themselves will be sorted thru and stored for archival purposes although with proper back-up technics I doubt i'll ever need them again.

I would definitely call this product a game changer for affordable digital streaming.

One thing that I tried for remote control is the $2.99 tango remote app. It only works with songs that are in the iPod on the iOS device (on the hard drive), but it can choose songs, albums, genre, and playlist using a separate iOS device. You simply load the app on both devices and use one as the player and the other as the remote.

I tried it with my iPhone and 1st Gen touch and it worked great. The main downside is that it could not control the volume from the iphone while the touch was on the Pure (it will allow volume control, just not on the I-20) and it doesn't work with other music apps.

I have a new nano. If I plug it into my 2215b marantz[with the headphone out on nano, to rca in aux 2215b] It sounds like crap.:thumbsdn:

So the pure dock will change the digital to analog and make it sound better?
If this is the case I'll order it tomorrow. For 100.00 bucks, thats cheap.:music:
 
opa1, yes it will sound better and could sound even MOAR better if in the future you get an external dedicated DAC between the Pure i-20 and your receiver.
 
That's the idea...

I ordered mine. Assuming your amp and speakers are good, and you are playing lossless audio files, the answer is yes. At least that's what I'm going on.

I have recently joined the audiophile community and chagrined to discover that all of the music I've purchased online, and all of the CD's I've ripped are stored (and played) with lossy compression - AAC. I'm really upset about this!

I can at least go back and re-rip my CD's. I did one, a classical guitar album, and played it from an iPod classic in an old Apple dock through a Marantz 1060 amp driving AR 4x speakers. I think the dock is using the headphone out, not line out, because the volume control on the iPod still functioned. However, I think it sounded a lot better than the AAC file. I didn't keep the AAC, so I can't do an A/B comparison. As soon as I get the Pure I-20 I'll see how different that sounds, and let you know.

I just started using the nano.[only 47 files so far] I'll have to check what type they are. Lossless is the type I need? I've been getting them from itunes.

You can't get lossless from iTunes. Better to buy the CD and rip them to Apple lossless, FLAC, or some other lossless encoding.
 
I just figured that out.:thmbsp: Downloading my cd's to lossless. I tried a few on my setup. Sounds better but still missing cd quality. Hope the 1-20 will help with this. Good dac's are out of my price range.

opa1. My comments were based on the i-20s function with an ipod touch. Of which its wifi capability is a huge part. That coupled with good sound. I personally think the sound quaility of the internal dac on the I-20 to be good enough to supplant the full size CD players I have if running apple loss-less.

Given the limited storage on a nano and its lack of wifi i'm not sure i'd invest a lot in a dock for it but that's just my personal opinion. YMMV.

I would think it will help just fine! Targeteye was just saying that the nano doesn't have a lot of storage, and no WiFi; but your lossless-endocded music on an I-20 should sound great!

You should check the Pure website for compatibility with your nano, just to be sure.
 
what jviss said.. :) ,,,ALso, you might want to think about the physical dimensions of the nano and how it would set in the dock.
 
I've looked at the site. The apps. say the nano works back to series2. Mine is new 6 series.
