Yeah, Ive been there with my MC2205, it so disappointing and upsetting.....My 2205 wasnt as badly damaged as this is, so I just repaired it....but this looks a bit more serious.....
I would just send it back, with pictures, get a refund.....

No McIntosh units can be shipped in anything but the original McIntosh shipping carton or the ones which Audio Classics also have.

When you win these things or buy them, inform the seller you will be sending the proper carton to ship it in, if they dont agree and wont accept that, then walk away from the deal.....

Nobody can pack these things in ANYTHING apart for the correct shipping cartons and have them arrive undamaged. They will get dropped, they will get tossed.
DO NOT believe what ANY seller tells you with regards to "it will be packed bulletproof", unless they are referring to McIntosh shipping cartons....

I do not like seeing a McIntosh looking like that as I am sure you dont either.....What a damn shame....:thumbsdn:

So the C32 arrived today, I insisting the seller remove the unit from the wood case and double box the pre-amp.... I'm getting the feeling collecting Mcintosh is kind of like playing golf... rewarding yet frustrating... :smoke:

What a heartbreak, send it back and let the seller deal with the insurance. The damaged subs I purchased from newegg were picked up by UPS and taken to their special place where they inspect things they destroyed.

For equipment insist on FedX ground, your photo is not unusual for UPS if that his who the seller used.:tears:

I dont think it matters who you use, my Sansui G9000 got wrecked by FEDEX......
You have to ship McIntosh products in the correct cartons, its as simple as that, then you have no problems......

Yeah most unfortunate... I have certainly learned a lesson many new McIntosh collectors learn the hard way.... send them a damn McIntosh box! It will be collected by FedEx tomorrow and refunded...well let the quest begin again...

I know its a little more expensive, but I had such a great experience purchasing my MC352 from Audio Classics.
They know how to pack the gear properly, and they have after sales support etc.....
If you buy from them you know its going to work, and you know its going to turn up in one piece.......
Its better than dealing with someone trying to flick their gear to make a quick buck or because it has issues they are are not disclosing....

I have been there, I learned the hard way too, you are certainly not alone, thats for sure.....

I agree with kevzep.

By the time you buy a vintage unit from most private sellers, send it out for a couple weeks or more for servicing, chances are you're in it for the same or more money than if you just bought from A/C or Tom Manley to begin with. Much easier to pay up front and have done with it. And of course, virtually eliminate the disappointment of opening a package of broken glass and bent metal. :thumbsdn:

So lads, was reading about the c33 in comparison the the c34v tonight and low and behold minutes later a mint condition c33 popped up on the auction site so i bid $100 to cancel the buy it now of $1200 and contacted the seller with an offer of $1000 which he duly accepted! based in Middletown, NY so not to far from McIntosh HQ who i will be requesting to ship him a box tomorrow am!

Actually, I would pay him and have him drop it off at the McIntosh facility service department and have them go through it as your property, they will ship it to you for free when done in the proper shipping container. Same money, better result.

Nice move with that auction! I'm gonna keep that in mind...

That is a real bummer. Every time I purchase a McIntosh component with a glass front I always worry if it will arrive ok. Story’s like this one only justify my concerns. This is just one more example of why I only purchase my equipment from audio dealers. For vintage gear such as this, I would highly recommend Audio Classics. They make sure the unit works perfectly before it’s sold. Everything they have shipped to me came in a brand new heavy duty factory type double box.

Well, by 'shady' you seem to be implying that I did something illegal, underhand, fraudulent, or of that sort of nature, which naturally I did not. I just paid a gentleman $1000 of my hard earned cash for an item that he decided to sell to me, no strong arm tactics there, no pressure selling just two parties who reached a mutually beneficial agreement...

Am I the only person that thinks this was a bit shady?

The seller was made an offer and he accepted. I don't see anything even slighty untoward here. In any case, the Buy-It-Now option continues to remain in effect after bids have been placed in most cases anyway.

I'm actually kind of flattered in a strange sort of way, being new to forums in general I don't think i've ever had an internet troll before

naturally no offence intended jchouston as i'm sure was the case with your initial post!

No trolling here.

Maybe I'm thinking of it wrong, but I'm curious why the tactic of killing the Buy It Now feature? Why not just make the offer?

Ok heres the story....

Was researching pre-amps..... hit the couch, excellent glass of red, music on, chilling with the mrs, planning our vacation.... checked iPad, saw C33 pop... wow...amazed...bit drunk....excited...YES! ...hmmm think fast, what now.... shall i just hit buy it now for $1200.... no that would be rash, now believe me i was feeling rash...but controlled the urge...ok upstairs to the Mac... hmmm.... what to do .....??? ok lets bid on the item...and take it to auction... this will give me some time to think about how much i'm willing to spend... ok back downstairs....thinking to myself....damn i want that sucker.... ok lets just shoot the seller a mail and make an offer... i mean who knows... bam.... couple of minutes pass and seller comes straight back and has accepted my offer.... Sweet! lets do this.... more wine, fine sigle malt (dalwhinnie 15 tonight) and 20 minutes later after a quick chat on the phone with the guy were all done.... more drinks all round!! all very sinister i'm sure you would agree...!
