R47XT = M95ed?

I seem to remember a post indicateing that the R47XT cartridge was the equivalent to the shure M95ED...is that correct? I found one with a shure 5x styli for $6 and pulled the trigger...hoping it is the M95ed...

Thanks

Well, we'll find out soon enough. The problem is this. The Shure replacement chart lists the N75 stylus as one of the direct replacements for the R5X stylus (R47XT cart). That would imply it was the older narrower, cart body with square cross section. A trip over to turntableneedles shows the R5X as a clone of the NDC stylus. A trip back to the Shure chart shows the direct replacement for some styli as being the NDC along with the N91, reinforcing the thinking that it's for the older cart body.

But...for carts listed as using the NDC stylus, the stylus listed as "upgrade stylus that will function" is the ME95ED, which, to my knowledge was just the re-release of the M95ED. The only problem is that that cart body is the newer, wider style. So the whole thing is a mystery and you will be the one to solve it. :D

Me? The one? No...you're the master. Although searching through the web, I see many references to the R47XT being the clone of the M75ED. I did find your earlier response indicating it was the M95Ed equivalent so who knows...I will trust your
expertise fully...I'll pop it in and listen...and probably won't be abe to tell much difference from the M91ED...sometimes I wonder if we make too much of all this. After 30 we can't hear anything anyway...except our wives telling us to grow up.

My only question is whether it physically fits in the body. If it does, then that's success.

I've recently acquired an R25XT cart with no needle, which is supposed to use the same 3x/5x/8x series of stylus, so I'll be watching with interest. It does seem to have the same body shape as the other Shure cartridges I own (M92E, M94E, M97xE) but I have been cautious and not tried a stylus on it yet.

I'm confused. You wonder if the N75E stylus fits the R47XT? If so, then the R47XT is the equivalent of the N75ED? Maybe I have missed something. The N91 I have is square edged. The N75 I have is also square, while the R47XT has a beveled cross section/bottom, as is my R25XT. The M75 and M91 are physically smaller than the R47and R25XT.

Okay, well then this answers the question easily. The R5X stylus will be compatible with the M95. The problem lies in the Shure discontinued stylus chart which lists the N75 as the replacement for the R3/5/8X. This must be an error.

Well, I can tell you the R47 doesn't sound bad at all. The stylus is a little long in the tooth and the highs seem to border on sibilant...but I think I'll pop for a new one...thanks, Howard, for your input and patience.
