Shure M91ED / Shure M95ED

I was under the impression that the m95ed was better... You can definitely get a better stylus from Ed Saunders for it. I think people talk about the m91ed so much because it's much more common. I use a m91ed on my Technics and really enjoy it.

Hello, Jursa and welcome to AK!

Both are good cartridges and both have lots of friends here. It would be hard for me to say which is better so I'll just say my M91ED gets more play than my M95ED. I guess that means I like the M91ED better.... but.... I like them both and am glad I have them both.

It's certainly newer so Shure would definitely take the position that it's better. It uses the later V-bottom body that's still used today on the M97xE. The M91ED uses the earlier flat bottom body that goes all the way back, I believe, to the M70.

Yes, from Pfanstiehl too. Funny, that! :dunno:

I have the Shure M91ED with normal Jico, in a Technics 1210 M3D. I have bought the Shure M95Ed in ebay and a normal Jico, because of it I want to know if there are big differences.

Thank you.

You can find the specs for both cartridges at Vinylengine.com. They are essentially identical. The M95 stylus will fit the M91 body and I am currently using one (shimmed to fit snugly) on my M91 body with good results-it gives you a stylus guard. Either cartridge should serve you well.

If you like the M91ED/JICO combination I'm pretty sure you'll like the M95ED/JICO combination too. Both of those combilations will work well on your SL-1210 so I think it really comes down to a matter of taste. Maybe you could tell us which you like better. :)

A long, long time ago, I had the M91ED. Broke the stylus, then got an M95ED. The difference was enough to blow me away. This was with a tiny Bogen amp and Utah speakers.
For good reason, I am not a fan of Ed Saunders styli. JICO is the best and closest in quality to original-manufacture styli.

M91 has sonics which many users describe as warm-analogue or more musical etc as the electrics in M91 & M75 which are same internally give a bit of a boost to lower bass and treble. Shure changed the curve of later cart's when they changed electric internal design to render a flatter response-the M95 is flatter hence many users of the M95 would perceive a more apparent or open midrange, because the bass and treble is not quite as accented.
I recommend, along with many other members here, that you treat your M91's AND M95's to a SAS stylus and hear just how good these 30+ yr old carts can sound.... many of us thought we had to go to expensive moving coil cart's to achieve the detail and and downright musical performance we get with our "Sassy Shures" :D
Anyway guys.. Enjoy Da Music Aye !!!

I don't necessarily hear any boosted treble in the M91ED, although the bass and mids are rather plush. It sounds pretty nicely balanced overall to me.

After digging the M91ED, I recently bought a so-called "better quality" V15 Type IV, thinking it would be heavenly. I was sorely disappointed, and resold it after a few months of trying to love it. The M91ED is still king on my vintage tables (AR/XA and Dual 1019).

Still king around here too. I just put one of my M91EDs, the one with the EVG/JICO, on a PL-510 I just resurrected. It sounds really good so that's an idler and a belt drive from beatcomber and a direct drive from me where this cartridge really shines.

One of these days when my ship comes in I may have to get SASsy with it. (Profound apologies to cairns4me :D)

I love both carts but slightly prefer the M95. There is one residing on my original model PL-570 right now.

Yup! And I prefer the M91ED. The thing is there are no wrong answers to this one. They're both quite good and differ slightly one from the other so it all boils down to personal taste.

Just to clarify things for the noobs out there, the SASsy thing relates to the JICO SAS stylus, and extremely well regarded and expensive replacement for most cartridges.

Boosted/plush...well let's say there's "plenty" of nice deep bass and lovely crisp treble.:)
About the M91 and V15 type 1V...The M91 series likes capacitance load of 400-500pf BUT the V15 type 1V NEEDS 200-300pf only.So this would suggest your phono leads capacitance value is suited better to the M91.
So no surprise the V15 type 1V sounded crap on your system.
Also the Type 1V has the much flatter response similar to the M95 etc which is a very different sound to the warmer sounding curve of the M91.
In the right arm with the right capacitance load and good stylus the type 1V can sound really ace but it's a more "palpable", more revealing delivery than typical M91 & M75 design delivers.
However if you ever get the desire to try another cart you could go for a V15 type 111 which likes the same cap' range as the M91, being in the 400-500pf range.
I have a "Sassy" V15 type 111; same in a type 1V and my first "Sassy Shure" which is the venerable M91. Have to say that IMHO there ARE noticeable differences but they are pretty subtle. The SAS gives the M91 the hugely increased trackability, sonic performance, detail rendition etc that most of us believed we had to spend much more to achieve. It really brings the M91/M75 performance to within a bee's doodle of that of the V series cart's.
The AUD/US $150.00 approx for a SAS is serious bucks BUT look at the cost of high grade stylii for say Ortofon, Grado, etc and the SAS is cheaper than some of those. But I regard my Jico Sasses (sasses??) as the most immediately obvious audio upgrades that $150 bucks have ever yielded....and NO I don't have any commercial interests with Jico Japan ! lol
Just happy to spend the time hoping to help other AK members enjoy da music.
Cheers guys...

You may well be on to something here, although I had similarly disappointing results using it on three different tables. Perhaps the mismatch is at the phono preamp. Whatever, I'm happily digging my SASsy M91ED!

I've gotta stay off this site... :nono:

I just ordered the basic PFANSTIEHL 4761-DE from NeedleDaddy to ressurect a M91ED body I've got to try out on a Grace 707 looking for some nostalgia.

I have the sassy version bookmarked at LP Gear and didn't need this encouragement to spend more $$$. :D
