Shure M91ED / Shure M95ED

Ok guys... The reason I'm scared to go the JICO route is because the cartridge body is SO old. Isn't it possible for one channel to get weaker than the other?

Oh, haha. Yes, I'm using the cart right now, but I sometimes wonder if the right or left channel is working like 90% compared to the other, and it bothers me. I so want to get a SAS for it, but I'll always wonder... It's in my head, I know. I believe it sounds excellent.

That's usually not a problem. But it is possible for one channel to fail entirely -- or work intermittently due to a loose connection inside the cartridge body. If you've been using the cartridge and haven't noticed this then you should be okay to pick up a new stylus.

Have you measured the L/R coils with a DMM or ohmmeter? That'll tell you how close the channels are balanced (relatively, that is; it won't tell you the exact decibel difference).

There's nothing in the cartridge body to fail with age, unless moisture or something corrodes the wire in the coils. In fact, Shure have frequently said as much - the only thing that wears out is the stylus, and every time you replace the stylus, you replace the diamond tip and the cantilever's suspension (the parts that wear out), the cantilever, and the magnet. The only thing left is the wire coils, the cartridge body, and the cartridge connection pins, which shouldn't wear out.

So if it goes bad, it REALLY goes bad? I'm not going to have one channel half-assing it?

This is the first cartridge I've owned where I left it alone and stopped looking for something better. That must mean that I love it. :)

Cartridges I've had in the past include:

Grado Red
Ortofon LM-10
Ortofon FF 15 XE
Audio Technica 110E
and a few others that I can't remember...

beatcomber,

I didn't know that you already sold your V-15 MK IV. I'm a little bummed to find out that I can't upgrade the same sound signature.

Still king around here too. I just put one of my M91EDs, the one with the EVG/JICO, on a PL-510 I just resurrected. It sounds really good so that's an idler and a belt drive from beatcomber and a direct drive from me where this cartridge really shines.

One of these days when my ship comes in I may have to get SASsy with it. (Profound apologies to cairns4me :D)

Hey there Boreas, I just noticed your post --hey what's this "apologies to me" bit?? No need for that mate....although I really SHOULD register the "SASsy Shures " with a nice logo artwork.... and make for all AKers some BEER MONEY from the ROYALTIES :beerchug:
Cheers mate!!

I've gotta stay off this site... :nono:

I just ordered the basic PFANSTIEHL 4761-DE from NeedleDaddy to ressurect a M91ED body I've got to try out on a Grace 707 looking for some nostalgia.

I have the sassy version bookmarked at LP Gear and didn't need this encouragement to spend more $$$. :D
Haha Muddywaters....Sorry about that dude :)
BUT the M91 will just love the 707 arm so I'm ShURE you'll end-up using the Pfanstiehl for those really old well-worn Microgroove records- if you have any and also pretty good with 45's....... and the SAS will get your blood pumping with incredible performance from better condition records-that's how I utilised my Ed Saunders M91 stylus(-similar to the Pfans'... ) after my M91 "got SASsy"....:music: Haha, All the best mate.

I like the way this feller thinks! (BTW, I heard that in Australia Foster's Lager is considered a "sissy beer" - is that true?)

+1..Sounds like a big statement but I agree totally.

I still haven't found anything that I like better than the M91ED + JICO SAS. The value per dollar is quite good, and it just sounds "correct" to me.

Having read many posts regarding the M91ED cart as compared to other Shure carts I thought I'd give it a try.I just picked one up with a standard stylus and mounted it on my PL-707. I have to agree with what others have stated (especially Beatcomber) about this cart.It has that lush midrange that I prefer.

Since I've been accustomed to listening to an M95ED with a JICO HE SAS, I was not expecting the stock stylus of the M91 to sound as good. But it does,Without a direct comparison,it's difficult to say which is the better, but the M91 has my attention and a JICO SAS for it may be in the future.Thank everyone.

Excellent!

BC, either you (and I) need to "button it" or buy all the M91EDs we can as fast as we can. any more threads like this and the price will go through the roof! ;)

John

Oh, I'm OK with that! I own two M91EDs and an M75ED (courtesy of DaveyW). I'm all set!

The funny thing is, the M91ED doesn't look like anything more than a "cheap" cart, but it sure delivers the goods.

I replaced a M91ED w/new Pfanstiehl stylus on my AR-XA with a M95ED w/genuine NOS Shure stylus. The M95 w/NOS approached the performance of my V15-III w/Ed Saunders stylus (which was noticeably better than the Pfanstiehl V15-III I tried).

The V15-III now runs a Jico SAS... and I ain't going back.

Bottom line: I like Shure carts, I love the the M91ED, and I love the M95ED more.
