Check out the veneer. Looks like it has been worked on. Where is the Rosewood?

The original is Macassar Ebony, not Rosewood, to get that veneer you need a second mortgage. If it is working and unscratched $750 won't last long. It may be a bad photo as the graining looks OK, but the colour is off.

He doesn't claim to be a doctor. Just spent his medical school loan on it. And from the looks of it, if I can add my own unsubstantiated crack --- maybe some time partying with it. Not that it has anything to do with the transaction. Besides from his sparse history, he doesn't seem like a thrift reseller. More like just getting rid of stuff he doesn't need.

My concern would be how is he going to pack that monster?

That's a beautiful receiver. I remember admiring a couple of them (Yes, more than one!) that MarkB had when I was fortunate enough to be able to visit him... and I've been looking in vain for one locally, ever since, to add to my receiver collection.

Very large (long) receivers with beautiful woodgrain and admirable performance. More impressive, I think, in real life than in the pictures. Given what some of the other big TOTL receivers go for, the price being asked may not be so unreasonable, even if Yamaha gear in general isn't usually all that expensive (except for some of their Japan-market stuff).

The CR-3020 is a beauty. I would never own one, though. It's enormous and it's a power hog. A CR-2020 is found at much more reasonable prices and would be more than enough.

MarkB's 3020 went through here and my own is sitting on the bench. Between snow and setting up a new HDTV I have been away from it for a few days, maybe tomorrow.

I contacted the seller about this receiver. He said it's the original Yamaha factory cabinet but he didn't remember exactly what wood it was from his purchase 30 years ago so he said rosewood in the auction.

I think he's a bit optimistic on his BIN price but you never know if somebody might want it bad enough to pay that much. If I didn't already have an equally nice CR-3020 in my collection I would be bidding on this one since they don't come around too often. Supposedly it's working fine and definitely looks to be in good condition although it obviously needs a good cleaning.

I too thought the veneer color looked off. Almost bleached out.

The market seems to be rebounding on the higher end stuff and IMHO the BIN was reasonable enough. I bought mine at a high point for slightly more, but it's here for the long run regardless. It's idle for now, I only fire it up every few months, but some day it will get the proper display and play it deserves.

Purely conjecture, but my guess would be an offer to buy, maybe locally, to avoid ebay altogether has transpired.

This is just an example of supply and demand. I'll bet Yamaha sold 5-10 2020's for every 3020 every sold. The 3020 is a rare bird. They don't come available often.

The 2020/1020 are great. It is more than enough for anyone if you want a great receiver but the 3020 is unique and the low production numbers and the limited availablity of 3020 put it in a different class.

Should a 3020 should be worth three times as much as a 2020 of equivelant condition?

Oh yeah........ If I really wanted one and I had to pay a few hundred extra to get one that is in great shape?

I'd brown bag my lunch for three months to pay the difference between a 3020 and a 2020.

Screw the electric bill. I'll turn down the heat whil I'm listening. Let the heat sinks warm up the room!

It's a bit fun to brag about the price you paid when you get a good deal but if I really want a paticular piece you don't see very often in super condition, you will have to pay a hefty premium. The cabinet on this 3020 could be freshened up with $20 in materials.

Some quick examples:

Yamaha PX2 PX3
Yamaha CA 810 vs CA1010 or CA2010

Personally, I think the 3020 is as good as and probably better than any of the other monster receivers out there.

The TOTL product in any manufacturers product line is almost always at least 2X the price of the 2nd from TOTL..
