Realistic Collectors?

I just got an STA-2270 in the mail today, and other than a slight problem with the protection relay, it's working perfectly. The tuner in it is great and pulls in almost anything. I love the power output LED's, though, they don't start to kick in until you get it relatively loud.

Now I need to clean house of the other receivers I have unfortunately.

So far, I have:

Speaker Pairs:
Realistic Mach One
Realistic Mach 5000
Realistic Nova-10

Receivers:
Realistic STA-84
Realistic STA-2000
Realistic STA-2100D
Realistic STA-2270

I also have 3 pairs of Centrios' version of the Minimus 7's.

The 84 is dead, the tuner is shot but the amp works. So it's either a parts machine, or if anyone wants it for parts, they can have it.

I have fond memories of the old Radio Shack catalogues from about '75 to '81 or so. I used to keep them in my bedside table when I was a kid...along with my Edmund Scientific,Heathkit and European Life Stereo issues.
I vividly remember my first purchase at a Radio Shack...a pair of decent headphones that were made by Koss. I can't remember the model number .
They were a birthday present from my mom and I can remember moving into my brothers room after Mom and I had fixed it up. New carpet, curtains, bookshelf and freshly painted desk, dresser and bed. Add my brothers' stereo and I was in HEAVEN! (Sanyo DCX-2000-K receiver,tp-1800 tt and a pair of two way speakers) First vinyl listened to on those headphones........Dark Side Of The Moon!
I was thinking that was it for Realistic gear, except for my 12 band EQ with expander circuit, but a rummage through the basement turned up some gear...
a pair of seven band EQ's, a Realistic Reverb unit,STA-42 receiver,SCT 24-A cassette deck,TR-883 8-track and Optimus 50 AV bookshelf speakers.
I sure would love to add apair of Mach Ones to the list!:music:

I have a pair of Shack speakers in our maritime museum playing whale music on weekends during the summer. They sound fine and have held up for three years now in that job.

My other RS gear is:

Optimus 1050 speakers 1990 version, one step below the Mach (Basement)
Optimus Nova-8 speakers (Study)
P5240001-Copy.jpg

(Nova 8's in the Bookshelves)

The Nova 8 speakers are amazing.

Optimus Pro X7
Accurian Amplifier
DX-440 Receiver
Pro-2006 Scanner

In the old days, the shack was where I got all my electronic pieces; resistors, caps, speaker grills. I worked in broadcasting and when I retired from corporation "A" I was contractually required to not work in the business for one year. In that year, before I started with corporation "B", I worked at the Shack. I think I spent more there than they paid me!

I was very impressed with their better gear. The store isn't geared to the hobbyist any longer, but I think the hobbyist market isn't there any longer, so they were forced to move on. I loved their catalog.

I'd forgotten how much Radio Shack used to offer before running across this thread. The link to the catalog archive set off a very long trip to nostalgia land for me.

In the day (late 70's, early '80's) everybody looked down on their hi fi gear, and nobody wanted the stigma of owning it (gotta have Kenwood, Pioneer, or Marantz to be cool). Looking back on it with more experienced eyes, the quality and value was amazing. It's impressive that they had the muscle to pull it off for so long.

I just grabbed a pair of Minimus 7's. They blow the Centrios replacements away. They truly sound like they are 4 to 5 times the size they actually are.

Loving the old Realistic stuff, I now have a fully Realistic system setup.

STA-2270
SCT-88
Minimus 7
and Nova 10's

Now I just need a turntable... wish I could get one for less than the 175 that people are asking around here :(

It all began after reading a statement somewhere that plastic turntables are junk. I didn't know anything was made of wood other than speakers. But now...
RD-8100 tt
R-8010 tt
STA-2000
Mach-1s
Nova-6s
Minimus-5s (mach-1 hatchlings)

I can't exactly say I'm a Realistic collector, but my first piece of vintage hi-fi was a Realistic STA-960 Receiver and it really rekindled my joy of listening to music. Loved everything about it, nice amp, great tuner, good phono stage and the tuning dial lit up real nice too....:) I used it as my main unit for two or three years but had to retire it as it was pretty battered and the filter cap's looked ready to pop. However, just a couple of months ago I managed to pick a STA-95 (..the earlier, almost identical version of the same unit) and that sounds just as good. Despite all the other stuff I have these days, these old Realistics ROCK..!! They're great units..:thmbsp:

I know the Recievers in the 70's, STA-2100, 2200, and 2300's were the "big boys", and are now in demand. I've had very good service from my STA-2700 bought new in 1988. It really is a sweet unit, and was the first with a remote. I run old vintage ElectroVoice speakers that were originally designed with big tube amps in mind, and are rated at 16 ohms. It's funny how some folks knock Realistic gear since this thing has been pushing those big EV's beautifully for 22 years.......after cooking 2 Sansui's. I've aquired 2 more through eBay, both in great condition, plus a MINT STA-2500, another nice powerhouse. The LX Speakers with the Linaem Tweeters were very nice, and on sale were a great value. They were a nice bright spot in an otherwise dying product line. Here is ALL of my RS gear:
Recievers:
STA-2700.....3
STA-2500.....1
STA-2380.....1
Speakers:
LX-10....2
LX-7......2
LX-4......2
LX-511...8
Mach II...2
Minimus 7....6
Minimus 11.. 8
PRO X7.......4
PRO X77.....6
PRO X88.....6

Misc.
NOVA-40 Headphones.
Optimus CD-6400 5 disc changer.
4 way Audio Selector....5
4 way Speaker Selector...5

I have one of those 960s and I think it is one of the most attractive receivers I've ever seen.
