Realistic Minimus 7 ID Thread

Ours seem to be very close in QC numbers and date codes:

Do you know if yours have the original SD-13 tweeters?

[/QUOT]
Sorry, don't know. I haven't opened them up yet.

ETA: The tweeter plate doesn't attract a magnet, so must be SD-13, I guess.

ETA2: In good daylight, I could see there's a faded '4' on the date code, so 4A0, so that's April 1980 from what I understand.

This thread is pretty cool. I didn't know these little speakers had such a following. I've got 40-2034A
QC 0488
12A8

So December 87?

12A8 is December 1988. December 1987 would be 12A7. 0488 is the serial number. If you have two (or more) each will have a different serial number even where the date code is the same.

Yours is the latest date I've seen so far for 40-2034A. And it's near end of the line for silver Minimus-7. They were last listed in the 1989 catalogue. Tandy might not have produced many (if any) into that final year if their intention was to sell off remaining stock at hand. They were replaced by white 40-2045, which were already in production since November 1988 even though not listed until the 1990 catalogue.

I'm personally rather fond of the silver Minimus-7.

These arrived today. Someone has removed the stickers but the model number 40-2030B with Japan on them narrows them down to some time frame.

Sorry, I couldn't embed a picture from my phone.

Cool thank you. I can see why these have such a following after playing with it a little. I'd like to try that Zilch crossover upgrade.
I think they used the walnut ones though.
Could I just order what they did from parts express? Or is the silver different inside?

Mid '81 to mid '87. Try a magnet on the tweeter face-plate. There have been sightings of SD-13 tweeters in early 40-2030B. Makes sense, as these are contemporary to early 40-2034 silver M-7s where SD-13 have also been reported.

PZ-2.x crossover mods have been installed in all flavours of Minimus-7. The stock crossover is the same in all M-7's, though earlier ones had an inductor with round plastic bobbin rather than the square bobbin of later models.

Check out some of the alternate parts options that Pete B has suggested. Everything you need should be available from Parts Express.

OK disregard my last comment. I've got everything in my basket with parts express but it's going to cost 76usd with shipping.

Is there a better Canadian supplier? Is it worth that to upgrade these?

Is there a through parts list I'm missing somewhere?

Parts prices have increased significantly since the original PZ-2.1 crossover bill of materials was compiled.
Part of the guidance Pete B offers in the referenced thread is price friendly alternative parts suitable for the mod. The availability of these continue to change over time.

Here's a list of parts currently available from Parts Express that are suitable for PZ-2.2 (without variable tweeter level):

Note that 10 watt resistors exceed Minimus-7's power requirements but Parts Express currently has a limited assortment of 5 watt values. Also there are no standard wire wound 2Ω resistors available, though I suspect a 2.2Ω 10W or 1.8Ω 5W could be subbed for R2 at lower cost than the Dayton.

Awesome thanks mate. That parts list is got one speaker correct? Sorry I'm asking dumb questions

That parts list is got one speaker correct?
The left column lists all the parts needed for a complete PZ-2.2 crossover.
Prices in the far right column are for two of each part.
So the total price shown (US $22.68) is for all parts needed for two speakers. Not too bad, depending on how high shipping costs are to Canada.

Wow ok I must have been doing something wrong. Thank you so much! I'll try again.

So eiyh that list do I still need the standard wire wound 2Ω resistors?

The list already has the 2 Ohm resister (part no. 004-2). But it's more expensive because its a Dayton "Audio Grade" resistor.
For less cost, you can instead order standard wire wound resistors in either:

2.2 Ohms -- part number 0016-2.2 at $0.83 each
or
1.8 Ohms -- part number 0015-1.8 at $0.68 each.

Cool so all I need is those 6 things? I still feel like I'm missing something

$22 for 2 sets ... now $24 for 1 set

Looks like those prices are now old. They are now doubled!! up over 100% in less than 4mos

Variations on a theme.

Bought a pair for $15.98.

The most I've paid.

I dig this thread. Glad to know I'm not the only one with a Min7 addiction. I believe I have 6 pairs floating around, some in my RV, others right behind me, 2 pairs have the Audyn cap upgrade. Unfortunately, I repainted a few nasty silver pairs black and ditched the decals, but a million pair...... Can't see that detracting from their value. Tonight, I found a single 40-2030 with a pair of 2030C's that I may snag, but the ask is a bit higher than I'd like.... We'll see.
