I don't recall hearing them called series one or two.
They did have some differences during their production,the biggest being the woofer used,some were CTS and some Jensen.
Seems like i heard of a third one was used,which wasn't very good,i can't be sure but that one may have been in the later IIIa or IIIb.
I don't think the CTS vs Jensen would make much difference,as long as they are working with no issues
Some models used the round tweeter,others square frame,again i don't think it really makes a difference.
Other differences if i remember correctly between the early and later versions was the crossover and maybe the port size.

Yeah that might have been what he meant.
I think as long as they are( Model III),with NO letters following you will be fine.
Just make sure all of the drivers are ORIGINAL,and are working correctly.
Woofer should be CTS or Jensen.
Midrange should be Philips with the whizzer cone,AD-5060/M8 or AD-5061/M8
Tweeters should be peerless.

I have what I believe you are referring to as "series 1." Square tweeters, and only one pot in the back for tweeter control. Later versions had two, one for the midrange as well. Just be sure that the pair you are looking at has Phillips midrange w/whizzer cone that are operational. They seem to be the weak part of the speaker and can be easily blown if over driven........believe me, I know. I had one repaired, and have since picked up a spare pair just in case. Wonderful speakers, though. Good luck.

I'm not sure if all of the tweeters are stamped with the 8 ohms on the cone front,but all of the ones i noticed were.

IMO, they should sound good if they have the Philips mids and Peerless tweeters. Check to see that all of drivers are working if possible. Used replacements are available with some patience. I have had some luck repairing mids (tinsel leads can sometimes be resoldered if they have been over driven). Best of luck, let us know if you get them and we can likely help you get them working to their potential.
Wow, it's been almost a year since I posted this question. I may have set some sort of a record for longest Craigslist transaction. The seller works for Union Pacific and and got called out of town for a very long time. When he finally got back in to town and emailed me in December,
I wasn't in a financial position to buy them. I told him if he still had them in a few months I would buy one of the two sets he was selling. And here they are! All the drivers work and everything is completely original. They sound amazing!

Congrats! It's always great to hear when things work out like this! The Rect. III's are big units with beautiful cabinets and a sound that still has many fans today!

I'm leaping onto this thread with a question. I have the chance to purchase a pair of Highboys for a terrific price. Problem is, my main system right now (Fisher 170) only pushes 18 WPC. Will that be enough to push these Highboys, or will I need to upgrade my amp/receiver as well?
According to this Stereo review, 20 watts per channel was recommended.
Nice(r) amplification is always a plus.

Thanks, Tubed. Just got them, brought them upstairs, plugged them into the Fisher 170, and bleh. 18WPC just isn't enough. So I went down to the basement, got the old Fisher RS-2010, carried it up, and wow.
