Report Problems with Ads Here!

I was just looking at AK on my phone, using Chrome. ( I use Chrome, Firefox and Opera intermittently on my phone) and I noticed one of those pol ads right on top. I guess I never noticed them before. One think I can say, is that in the ad saturated world we are in now, I've gotten pretty good at just glazing over ads and not even really seeing them. There is probably some subliminal crap getting to me. Oh well, I try to block all I can when it's convenient.
 
No political ads for me. Mostly stuff I ignore.

We are marketed to, a.m. to p.m., cradle to grave. Evolution will desensitize us to most of it in the coming years, I sincerely hope. Everything headed all Orwellian, from what I see.

But that is another story.

I went with nothing, other than alerting mods to the problem. The "disgusting" come-ons have vanished, and now I'm back to the audio-related banners, and innocous stuff like Avis.

I have no desire to block all ads - just the aforementioned ones that started this post.
 
Chrome and Firefox work well on most sites. Using M$ software, in my experience, not so much.

Irrelevant and objectionable ads - to paraphrase Robin Williams: under redundant in the dictionary, it says "see redundant". :biggrin:
 
I'm not a big TV guy, but at least one will be on most of the day--news, weather, fake news, and old re-runs (from back when I could actually tolerate TV content), but ever since they have lifted the ban on liquor commercials and pharmaceutical commercials, it has gotten crazy. A couple of the networks seem to run these incessantly, but I tire very quickly of watching "beautiful people" walking down the beach and discussing their STDs, or how beautiful your skin or nails can look with only a minimal chance of "fatal" side effects or infections. Yes, you can have the best-looking skin, hair and nails of any corpse down at the morgue, but don't forget a nice bottle of liquor while doing it.

EDIT--and I am no "prude"--I drink, I smoke, I still have sex, but this non-stop sh*t gets overwhelming, at times. How about "real drugs" for "real diseases"--I really don't care about your sex life, nail fungus, skin rash, or thinning hair.

Huh. I just saw some of this content. I never noticed it because I don't scroll past this block for my posting on the page bottom, but sure enough there's HRC.....
 
I've not seen such ads?? And I run Chrome on Win and Ubuntu mostly with , for the most part Ghostry says (right now) it's blocked 21 of something and Https (secure says it's blocked 9) of something?? And Privacy Badger, wants to reload the load the page so it can block something else??

But it sounds like your browser is not secure ... enough???
 
I got my very first political ad today, after having visited Fox News, seeking a video clip from a sports report.

Since the banner ads are Google-based, it would seem that the ads a particular user sees are, at least in part, related to browser history.

On the other hand, since some disgruntled person registered me for a mail-order bride site, I now see banners for sites advertising Russian/Ukrainian/Chinese/Japanese/Colombian/Serbian/pick your region, young ladies seeking a husband in a foreign land. These banners are more pernicious than political ads. My efforts to unsubscribe have met with little success.

Somebody is paying Google to run that ad. "Promoted Content". It may be geographical targeting. Given the breadth of content that one network may own, you might well be a member of some site that owns the provider of that ad. Standard TOS usually include the right to send ads to members of sites affiliated with the one to which you belong. Some of the bigger forum networks have hundreds of affiliated sites, covering absolutely unrelated material, often including some NSFW content.

Now, if you get a banner from Videokarma, PoliticalChat, or Ms Grumpy's Chevy site, those would be tied to your membership here. (Don't hold your breath waiting for THAT to happen, as those banners are posted on the AK home page. You know that Grumpy wouldn't pay Google to run those. ;))

I don't DO Fox News - but I get that crap too.I get the russian/czech/asian bride ads too -
1). I'm already married to a nice little country girl ... and
2). I'm lesbianese ;) - so the one gal I got is good for me!

But there are a lot of web ad businesses that seem to think the whole web is male ...

We are not trying to place blame for these ads upon those who are being exposed to them. However, search engines and other web apps/sites can see your IP addresses. Those web presences are able to associate your activities to your IP addresses, and can respond to the data collected on you across machines and browsers. They may also be able to connect multiple IP addresses to you, based on a variety of activities you participate in on the web. Clearing browser history is not likely to do much in this regard.

The ad servers are attempting to provide you with ad content that they have extrapolated to determine what may have some interest to you, or to get a response/reaction from you. How these determinations are made is proprietary to those suppliers. Therefore, how you wind up with certain types of ads can be rather difficult to determine. Many of the ads you see are indeed influenced by your web activity, albeit sometimes quite tangentially.

Having said all of that, usually, the types of ad content allowed on a site may be selectable, or filterable, by the site owner(s) and/or contracted intermediary ad server services. On the other hand, advertisers are constantly looking for ways to get around such filtering. This is likely the case here. Please keep reporting, and please remain patient, until these issues can be addressed. Again, the staff members who are regularly present on site do not have the authority or power to deal with this issue. Notifications have been made to those who can act. We must try to remain patient until the required time and research have been invested, and the issues then resolved.
