Commercial radio seems to be dominated by media giants, playing the same twenty records on endless loop.

I'd probably go to internet radio for 'musical knowledge'.

I begin each day by listening to the local PBS classical station. No loop programming found there. Nor with the Performance Today program hosted by Fred Childs.

I wish they would play more other things than symphonies. Most of them are boring.

My classical station plays the gamut of the genre including ballet, concertos, cantatas, quartets, opera, chamber music, suites and soloists. Sometimes soundtracks from masters like John Williams, Hans Zimmer, et.al.

What "more other things" should they play?

The one I get plays all that stuff too but, chances are, if you happen to tune in, there will be a symphony about midway through. I want things like Till, two part inventions, Debussy, Chopin piano, Liszt, etc. Shorter stuff that's interesting. Forget most opera and ballet. Most of it is boring, too.

Ok. I enjoy lots of symphonic content, but prefer post Romantic era stuff. Copland. Rachmaninoff. Prokofiev. Debussy. Ravel. Higdon.

Along with current John Williams stuff. There are many tracks in The Force Awakens I find tasty loaded with wide dynamic range that takes you down to a whisper and back and employs modern melodies. "Rey's Theme" is a favorite.

In Philadelphia the exceptions are all exceptional college stations.

Grew up outside Philly -- listened to WMMR and WDAS at night instead of doing my homework ... regret that WFLN had to stop its classical format... I 'tune in' the RTI stream from time to time..

it depends on where you live. Where I'm at there are some good choices for independent, non commercial stations. There's three of those stations that I regularly check for music and as often as not there's something that I really enjoy on at least one of them at any given time... and there's something nice about being surprised by some new music that one may have never heard. Unless your taste is some kind of line that goes straight down the center of the most aggressively marketed, mega selling stuff out there, then there seems to be little point in commercial FM radio, which to my mind has become more vacuous, repetitive and boring than it ever has before. It's all automated now, with playlists determined by focus groups and no input at all from the kind of individuals who at one point helped to break a lot of artists and sometimes chose less obvious songs to play...

WFLN merged with WRTI. They now play classical during the day and jazz after 5PM to 5AM the next morning when it's back to classical.
