RIP Phife Dawg...

poppachubby

Boo Yaka! Boo Yaka!
Man... this is a hero from MY generation. Grew up with Tribe's music. So young too, really sad day for hip-hop.

Wow. The Tribe were true innovators . Looks like complications from diabetes, at age 45. Geez, too young.

I'll have to play Midnight Marauders tonight. RIP

I didn't see this post and posted my own just now.

Damn, I can't believe Phife is gone. RIP brother.

We were born on the same month and year (six days apart) and we both have diabetes. This is a very strong message to me to keep my sh*t together regarding that disease.

Diabetes is a bitch. You really have to manage your lifestyle to keep it under control. 45 is way to young.

RIP

Did anyone watch "Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest?" It's an interesting, if not uncomfortable, look at the in-fighting in the group. My take on it is that Phife felt betrayed by Q-Tip, almost abandoned. He just seemed hurt and lashed out at others. It would be hard to be in a group with your life-long best friend then to have him split the group and go in his own direction. I'd argue that "The Love Movement" was pretty terrible and I'm glad they stopped making music when they did. The one nice thing about the documentary is that towards the end, they were able to make amends enough to put on a show together. It's fun to see them planning their moves and executing them live, it's like watching two little kids playing around and having fun.

I'm not on social media or the like but I'd be curious to see if anyone has seen anything that Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad or Jarobi had to say.

I haven't seen that. Didn't even know it existed, I'll definitely try and see it.

I always joked that the best part of The Love Movement was the free t-shirt that came with it. I'm a big fan, but just couldn't get into that one.

I'm spinning the debut this morning.
My go-to is usually The Low End Theory, but like poppa this is from my generation, and the debut brings back a lot of memories. Tribe and the other Native Tongues stuff really stood out from the pack back in the day, IMO.

This era of Hip-Hop/Rap (Tribe, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Leaders Of The New School, etc. etc.) is from my late high-school/early college years. With you and poppa, I have a strong emotional connection to the songs. Even if it's background music, it still brings back memories of the day, a time in my life when I was first becoming really independent and trying to figure the world out (not that I have yet!). It seems corny to type that but it's how I remember feeling.

I favor Low End, with Midnight Marauders a very close second.

I was playing Tribe the other day and had to explain the "Back in the Day, when I was a teenager, before I had status and before I had a pager" lyrics to a younger person. What's a pager? :)
