Sansui 9090 case

I am starting to make a case for the Sansui 9090 receiver, it will also fit the 8080. This case will have a solid walnut front edge and bottom. If anyone is interested I can post some photos of the construction of the case.

Yes, please post photos. I bought an 8080 today, and the veneer is peeling in a few places. A new maple case would be simply awesome.

Here is a few photos of the 9090 case you will notice that it has a solid walnut beveled front edge, also the ply is 9 layers, no it is not birch ply just mahogany ply like the original but way more layers. lots more work to be done stay tuned.

Veneer time

I am veneering the back edges too. I cut the 4x10 sheet of Black Walnut veneer with a olfa knife and a straight edge.

Tom, I'm surprised you don't use walnut veneer plywood like Sansui did. That would eliminate most of the veneer work. The veneer you do use looks great. I've never seen big sheets like that. Is it make up from edge glued pieces or does it have some kind of backing?

Pete the veneer is paperbacked. I cannot get 1/2 inch walnut ply here,I would have to order more than one sheet at a time and I really like the veneer I am using.I use it for all my projects.And to cut it at 45 degree angle square then make a perfect joint is too hard with my equipment.I made some other cases this way but have found a better way for me to do them.The veneer work for me is the easy part of the job.

Cutting perfect miters would be a challenge. I forgot it was 1/2. That would be a little tougher to find. Long Beach has a very good specialty plywood shop (Long Beach Plywood). They have all kinds of exotic stuff.

Tom, I called them this morning and they don't stock it in 1/2". They said they would get a price on Monday and give me a call. They also said it was only available with an MDF core. I'm not sure that will be strong enough for a mitered corner. I'm not sure what you are thinking but it will be expensive to ship a 4x8 sheet. I might be able to cut it down for you into shippable pieces.

As far as making perfect mitered corners, Have you tried cleaning them up with a 45º chamfer bit in a router?

Thats ok i just wanted to know how much the ply wood be in the USA as I find things cheaper there than in Canada.I can get the same mdf core here also and have considored using it because it is flater and easy to work ,but I think it is too far away from the original to use and I think that the average Sansui guy would want his case in plywood.I am very happy with the way I am currently making my cases and other woodwork projects, with my present equipment and buliding methods. If it aint broke dont fix it . Thanks for the reply.

Yes it helps being a cabinet maker, even though I am using portable type tools,The finish will be a high quality furniture grade spray job.

Finished veneering

Today I finished veneering ,routered out the grill it will sit flush, then I drilled the mounting holes on the sides I used a jig for this.

Looking good. Does the paper back veneer leave much of a seam at the joint between the top and the side?
