I agree with you on the aesthetics. I too find Sansui black classic. Long ago I posted my preferences for the black of the AU 717 or 919 as compared to, for example, the silver knobs of the 9500. Someone suggested that I get an older model like the 9500 or venerable AU 111 and paint the knobs black . To each his own. While I prefer the alphas, having heard them, I could still be very happy with a AU 9500 or 717 and no I wouldn’t “Paint It Black”.

Thanks you the listening reports @mjs1 and @Alfanijs - a thorough pleasure to hear your thoughts and both of you write so engagingly and with subtle care to use of words. :) Maybe its time to bring out the 907LTD again into my main room... it's been sitting in the bedroom for over a year.
 
There are a few lovely black Alphas out there, including quite late model stuff:
Stunning... Black is beautiful; these machines must sound better than their champagne counterparts! ;)

These are pretty rare I think, it appears only a few of the later top models are available in black, and they are pretty expensive - if one can find them in the first place!
Happy with my amps, I already have too many (would love a black Anniversary though... drool...)

The only information I can find on black versus champagne production numbers is on the 07 Anniversary. In general it seems that black faced models are rare. Best of Sansui lists a production number of 1000 amplifiers and, to quote AK member czubsi, who cites a different production number (I don’t know his source),

“AU-07 produced 437 pieces of which 43 black ... I had 9 pieces black at home and 19 silver ...”

We classic black Sansui lovers were in the minority. I took what was available at a “reasonable” Yahoo.jp auction price. My C-2105 is champagne, my B-2105 black.

I’ve decided, despite being a Yankee, to go with ...

I will add my pennies to the discussion about the sound, those amazing HiEnd amplifiers that were produced by the Sansui company, and whose sound I read here a very interesting discussion and valuable comments.

During the last time of the corona virus pandemic, I had all the Sansui tips of the MOSfet series at home: B-2102MV, B-2103MV, B-2105MV and compared to the B-2301L on the Sanken LAPT.

Initially, I conducted comparisons with the pre C-2301, in all cases, but I got the impression that such extended systems with additional pre + cables "conceal" the delicate differences between the individual terminals. Subtle differences "blur". That is why for detailed comparisons I used the Ayon CD, with a built-in DAC and quite neutral pre, to ignore the influence of additional elements, such as additional cables. I must emphasize that when changing the cables in such a reduced system: CD - power amplifier - loudspeakers, each change of cables was very noticeable and strongly influenced the change of the range transmitted by the band systems.

Comparisons made on my system:

The first remark, as it appears straight away, is that all MOSfet power amps sound much softer than the B-2301L power amp on the LAPT. In the case of the 2301L, the sounds are not as "velvety" and "warm" as those containing the MOSfet.

Second note. Out of all the MOSfet terminals, the most similar to the top B-2301L in terms of the transmitted bandwidth range from Hz to kHz, seems to be the B-2103MV, playing the most even, "neutral" band, similar to the 2301.

Third note. Each of the B-2102MV, B-2103MV and B-2105MV terminals plays in a different frequency band.

B-2102MV

It has a very nice stage, extended sideways, up - down and down. It sounds with a strong bottom and midrange, but has a softer than the other two, the most light and "velvety" treble. This, however, in my opinion, is its huge advantage, as it makes only this power amp so deeply extended to the soundstage. This tip builds an incredible depth to the stage. That is why, in my opinion, it also has a very detailed bottom end, in which individual sounds do not merge into a uniform bass mass. All additions, plates, cicadas, etc. "disturbances" and embellishments are very delicately sounding but perfectly audible. What is important to me is that they do not disturb, drown out the melody, and do not distract from the enjoyment of listening to music.

B-2103MV

It plays very well. In this power amp, in my opinion, the influence of the MOSfet is the least audible and very, for the first time, it resembles the sound of the AU- @ 907XR, if you have it fresh in your memory. However, when you hear it for the first time, you get the impression that it makes a very "velvety" sound in relation to the aforementioned Alpha.

The sounds in the B-2103MV are distributed evenly across the speaker line. The scene is built slightly deeper. The deeper the better, the better the quality of the listening CD. Here the details, which are the responsibility of the midrange and the upper part of the frequency response, are much better audible, but not with such intensity that it degrades the sounds and interferes with listening. This, however, makes the stage much shallower than can be seen in the case of the B-2102MV.

B-2105MV

It plays with the range most shifted towards the upper part of the band - the most "bright". This probably makes the soundstage seem shallow, but the sound comes out towards the listener.

This is the ending with the most resonant scene. You will hear very extensive various hums there. First impression - as if you found yourself in a huge cathedral. There are sounds from all sides. "WOW" effect! The game is amazing! However, for me, such an extensive scene is rather unbearable. The sounds detach from the speaker lines, and you feel like you are immersed in the sounds. After a while, the sound overwhelms!
 
I am going back to the 2020 discussion. Comparing the AU-X1111MV with the B-2102MV + C-2102 doesn't make much sense. With a good pre, such as the dedicated C-2105 or the C-2301 + B-2102MV, it surpasses the AU-X1111MV integra. The B-2102MV power amplifier is of the highest class and should not be combined with the C-2101 or C-2102 - the middle class, as these can degrade the sound. The system sounds like its weakest link.
 
Hi everyone! I've got an AU-a607NRAII and it has a couple of problems: first, there is some noise when adjusting the volume which is not my greatest concern, but still would be better to get rid of. Second, and most importantly it has some wheezing sound at more than 40% volume. At lower volumes no problem at all. Any ideas on how to heal that?

You don't have a Service Manual for a Sansui a7/a9 ? - is that the basis of your request? The reason I ask is that I doubt those model ranges ('Sansui a7/a9' & 'Sansui α' bear enough resemblance to one another to be of any use. :)

I was right, having just downloaded and looked at the a9 schematic (which should be the most sophisticated 'a' model), it is very ordinary, nothing like an 'α'

I'll assume you don't have a Service Manual.

I am looking to change the trimmers on my sansui alpha 607 xr power amplifier PCBs with multi turn sealed ones. There are four trimmers per board - 100 ohm, 470 ohm and two 1K ohm. Since the power amplifier PCBs are standing vertically, I am looking for trimmers whose leads and adjustment screws are at 90 degrees to each other so that the trimmer sits flush with the pcb and the adjustment screw are at the top giving access to the adjustment screw for easy adjustment. I have gone through the available trimmers at mouser but could not finalize which trimmers to buy as the reference photos could be indicative and not represent the actual item.

I am attaching a pic that is indicative of the trimmers that I want to buy. An actual model would be really helpful that is not too expensive around 3-5 USD would do

Regarding the second post in this thread, describing the output transistors in the various alpha models, I wish to point out that the high end alpha (907) models use LAPT-2 OPT’s, not LAPT-23’s. The 23’s are in MT-200 packages. The 907’s that I have or have worked on (DR, KX, MR) use LAPT-2’s in TO-3P packages . Some of the subs listed as well are no longer available. I will be buying some subs for my units so as to stave off some anxiety.
 
Since this is a thread where adjustments are mentioned, it possibly worth adding sort of a side-note, so to say.
This may be obvious for some people, as equally well it may not be for others.

So, to adjust 1 (one) channel for a Sansui Alpha 607/707/907, X111/X1111 or B-210x/230x in REAL-TIME (i.e seeing all adjustments on that channel in the same time) one needs 4 (four) multimeters/DMM's:
(A) - 1 for DC offset Hot-Cold
(B) - 1 for bias on Hot amp
(C) - 1 for bias on Cold amp
(D) - 1 for DC offset Hot-Gnd
First 3 (A, B, C) adjustments are most important, so good resolution on mV level is needed on those multimeters for a proper job. The last one (D) is less demanding from that perspective.

That's my way of doing it. Of course, YMMV.
