Hi Sansui experts! Wondering can anyone recommend a drop in replacement power supply filter capacitors for a Sansui BA-2000 power amplifier? Originals are 12,000uf 63v thanks !

I restored the integrated version of this amp a while back, if I remember correctly they are screw terminals and 50mm in size. I tried to go with new screw terminal caps- doesn't work. Use 383LX123M080B052VS
(50mm) or
382LX123M080N062
if they're 40mm and I remember wrong. The voltage rating bump is needed.
Not cheap, but worth it.

Thumbs up for the CDE 381-383 LX series. High Quality. Have them in 3 amps now, latest as 12000/100V as suppplies in a 999, Digikey part 338-2044-ND - 40mm/82mm. Totally unscientific.....whenever I use these and subsequently put the amp through its paces, there is always a good indication of energy and low-end reserve that stands out.

Thanks for the replies guys the dimensions are 50mm x 75mm I was hoping to find a version that was screw terminal that fits the original metal brackets they hold onto are there none left available??

Hi,

Can you confirm themax height that could be used, there are 80.7mm and 82mm height screw terminal 50mm dia 15,000uf 63v caps that might fit, if there is enough hieght clearance.

Cheers
john

Again - don't do screw terminal. They 90% won't fit and are much more expensive.

I'm curious - why won't a screw terminal cap fit - is a question of height? (Remembering that the OP's original question was for a "drop in fit" and a snap terminal cap would require some modification to the connections ??)

Like the au-9900 and au-11000 these are screw in with metal brackets I was trying to find screw in replacements which would mean no mods to the nicely made metal brackets they screw into - I’ll get a photo. From what I can see snap ins or other kinds would need some other mods to do nicely

Here’s a photo I found online of the brackets I’m referring to I haven’t pulled mine out yet as I’m working on the other boards first and want to collate all the parts into one order

It looks like those have been re-stuffed - note the wires emerging from the drilled out rivets.

Replacement capacitors that will accept those OEM brackets exactly are very rare, but the work required if discarding the brackets is a pain in the neck - no easy answers here. I have seen that people use standard screw terminal type replacements and bend the middle bracket (the one shown in the picture) so that the holes in the capacitors line up with the holes in the bracket - but it isn't an elegant solution in my opinion.

I have done several AU-9900 and 11000's and the screw ins can work with the original brackets with a slight modification. I am looking for photos but IIRC a slight bend along with an enlargement of the existing holes to accommodate the larger diameter screws on the new Cornell Dubilier caps is required.

Yup height. Plus no matter how you cut it, modification is needed. The old screw bracket bus bars are the wrong spacing and wrong hole size....honestly much easier to just wire it without the old bars.

I found some really nice looking caps, that I got very reasonable by buying a case of 15. Very well made, I believe marked as CDE. Rated at 18,000 at 80V. The right diameter, just a wee bit higher than the originals. Screw hole with screws and washers included. I had to make the bracket holes a little bigger, and bend them in the way shown in the last picture. Actual cap measurements came in a little under 16,000 so I felt these were good replacements for the two BA-2000's I restored for a friend. I will send you pictures of them tomorrow. I also added standoffs to the rectifier board to allow the caps to fit like originals, they would have still fit without the standoffs

Thanks everyone for the replies I’ll pull mine out measure the terminal distances and try find a close match and modify the bracket not keen on doing wires and removing of the bracket

Looks good zekeman appears to be a good compromise - look forward to seeing what Tom B was able to achieve

So the caps I used were "IC", short for Illinois Capacitor. The box says Illinois Capacitor with country of originan as Taiwan. They look real solid.
Each come with its own bracket and screws and washers. I discarded the bracket and used the original sansui brackets.
The screw posts are aluminum recessed into the cap at least 1/2 inch, but do extend about 1/4 inch above the top of the cap.
The top plate of the cap is a thick pheonalic plate with a rubber vent hole in it.
I like the additional UFD they supply, along with the increased voltage capability.
I liked them because the diameter was the same as the originals and allowed use of orig bracket. Height was probably OK but I did put a few standoff washers inbetween the rectifier board and the mounting bracket, to keep the capacitor from touching top plate.
I also like them because they are black like originals.
Some pictures.
