Sansui SP-3500 - An AK'er Gift and Restoration Project

Picture Biggles' head flopping down on to keyboard.

I should load up the III's and the ADC's, I'd like to hear those on that.

You can do that one day will do an audition. My SOTA's and stages are setup sweet. They even have me drooling now. My album collection has tripled, well maybe sextupled.

I'm going to say sextupled, but that was an easy one. Have you procured any pair of speakers that celebrate the midrange? A pair of Wharfedale W90s maybe? Don't get me wrong, the JBL leaning towers are pretty darned sweet. Aren't you curious though?

No.

You already saw speakers stacked up to the point of not using them and giving them away. Oh I see lol hint hint:D

To tell the truth I have a dream system to listen to music, so thats what I'll spend my time on. I think with both amp/speaker systems on at one time Im missing nothing.

Hey mang!

I was hoping you'd stop by. I followed your AR thread as much as I could, but it's Huuuuge. I'll see if I can't dig that out tomorrow, maybe later tonight. I'm all about the whole less noticeable idea.

Biggles

Yeah, wanted to see how you were progressing with these. I know they will look beautiful when you're finished.

Oh, there's no question that you have The Dream System. There's absolutely no reason whatsover to buy any more equipment, and that's a fact buddy! Which is exactly why I mention it. I mean, after you conquer Mt. Everest, what's next?

Yeah, wanted to see how you were progressing with these. I know they will look beautiful when you're finished.

I got the fresh filler installed on the new top missing portion yesterday. Am headed out to sand it down appropriately. I'll make the new cuts you suggested and see what the deal is. I figure at this point, it's all about prep. I need to get this right, then the veneer will just fall in to place. It's excruciatingly tedious, but I need to push through it. Thank you for the advice.

First off, I would like to apologize to everyone for dragging this out. It wasn't my intention and if saying to yourself, "Egads Biggles, just get on with it already!"? I'm probably using a few more expletives in there, for sure. There's nothing I'd rather be doing than be putting the 180 grit to these right now with the oil handy.

All that being said, I got the lateral cuts put in the vertical pieces there. The filler I installed yesterday has cured enough and I sanded it smooth. But as you can see, it's too low. So, I will apply some more filler here in a bit. The vertical sides are ready for veneer!

There's good, positive forward progress going on here!

Yeah, I got a full time job. I work all day. Who does the shopping? I do. Who cooks dinner? That's right, it's me again.

So where does the most awesome guy of all time collapse after a full day like that? That's riiiight. Perched over a pair of vintage loudspeakers in his bat cave.

I have 2 out of 3 pieces of veneer in place. The second one is under that portable typewriter waiting patiently for the glue to dry.

Tomorrow night piece #3 will slide in to existence.

Hey mang!

You have full time employment? That's awesome news and congrats!

So, did you add filler to the top spot yet? If not, you can laminate two pieces of veneer to make a thicker piece. If you already did, never mind then.

So what's for dinner?

Hey!

Halved a chicken, extra virgin, spices, 425 degree oven until done. BAM.

I got the second layer of filler installed Saturday and sanded/filed on Sunday. I'm tellin' ya, those tiny little metal files rule for this little job. By Sunday evening all 3 areas were sanded and cleaned, installed first piece of veneer. Tonight I got the second piece installed. Another thing I learned pretty quickly, lining the back of the scrap veneer with masking tape is an absolute necessity.

There's no going back now, what it is, it will be.

Yeah! I started new job today, all went really well. I expected as much, I'm pretty good at stuff and I play well with others. I asked if I could have a Personal Radio in my office, so I dragged in the Magnavox Console. It worked great all day long, it was awesome.

Happy Saturday!

Wow. First full-time work week in very nearly 3 years. I did really well, everyone is happy. But dang, talk about totally crunching my artistic inspiration, that's not right.

Moving right along, am having a few issues with getting the very small triangle cut out of the veneer. The 2 points, the 2 very sharp and small points split immediately. Even using masking tape it's not holding together. I'm getting close though! The masking tape I'm using to hold the bits together is too tacky. It's older black masking tape I use for holding the "studio" together when taking pictures of smaller objects. Newer, more appropriate masking tape that isn't quite so darned tacky might hold wood veneer well enough, yet pull free when I'm done cutting. At least that's my observation for now.

I did find that using a pair of scissors on the smaller pieces worked a lot better than the x-acto knife.

Hey Big's, it is very fragile as I told you. See if this helps you a little. I use the blue painters tape and it seems to work pretty well. If I remember you said that this is for the top piece, correct? If so, it will be a triangle, basically. Tape both sides of the veneer before you start, if you have enough and are trying to match the grain some figure that out first. Cut the angle side (towards the middle of cab) first and position into place. Mark the other 2 edges about 1/16" beyond the 2 sides that come together to form the corner. Make sure the piece is marked as needed, or you get to start over. What you should have now is a piece of taped veneer with 2 lines marked on it to slightly overlap the edges where the corner is. Take the straight edge and lay it over one of the lines and take a new blade and lightly begin to cut from one of the outside edges towards the middle, stop after you get a bit over the middle point and start from the other edge working towards the middle again. Keep repeating until it is cut all the way through. Now you can start on the final edge by repeating the same procedures. Let me know if that is clear. Good luck buddy!

NOTE: When removing tape always go with the grain never across.

Thank you Doctorolds,

YEAH! It's good here, just need to nail down the proper ingredients and angle of attack. Am off to an afternoon of fun and merriment at a child's birthday party. I'll make a huge effort and see if I can't get a roll of that blue tape in my hands.

Hey,

Doctorolds, oddly enough your words made complete sense! Thank you, will be following your advice for sure.

4-2-7, holy fnorking YEAH. I have a good amount of really fine, light woven linen left over from the Altec's Bikini Grills that I made. Nailed it, thank you!

I spent most of today at a birthday party, didn't even have a chance to buy a roll of tape. I'm due out in Oakland by 9:30am tomorrow morning, getting paid cash. I'll leave 15 minutes early and stop by their local ACE Hardware for said roll of tape. I'll probably grab a few other bits as well and want to see their selection on the Watco products.

Biggles

ps - Drug these home from the birthday part today. I had a great time, will just put these rigs in my pile and maybe some time later this year give them some attention.

Nuttin' yet. I procured myself a fancy role of blue masking tape and that's a help. But it turns out there's old adhesive on one side of the scrap veneer. Apparently, the masking tape (or any tape), really loves that old adhesive!

If you look at the image, where I've edited it, is where the veneer splits. I can get it cut now without much issue, but getting the blue tape off without pulling the veneer to maybe 3 or 4 pieces hasn't happened, yet. Am using the x-acto knife under a magnifying glass to remove the tape. VERY carefully.

Earlier today I cut a small portion of linen, applied glue to the veneer and set the linen in it. Then a few moment later, added more glue to the linen so it wouldn't starve the area of glue. When that's cured enough to cut cleanly, I'll try that route. Cross yer fangers!

Hey Big's, that is why I sent you a big piece, just kiddin. I sand the back of my veneer scraps a bit to make sure they are close to flat, but I do leave a bit of the old glue for strength or to help hold it together. I do not wipe the back off, just blow the dust off a bit. I may have forgot to mention this next part, so forgive me. If you are successful at cutting the shape you need, only remove the tape from the back where you are going to glue it down. The piece of tape on the top stays on and is removed after the glue is dried. That is the only way I have had any success.

Hey mang!

I was going to give you a call, if nothing else just to say hi. But my blood sugar is dropping and am concentrating on cooking dinner! It doesn't help that the neighbors are having a party and grilling some tasty treats!

Actually, the tape on the non-glue side barely sticks at all, so there's no issue there.

What if I mounted the scrap veneer "upside down" with the sticky portion upwards? Then I could glue it in place and remove and/or sand it clean once the glue has dried. That sounds doable, I think!

Maybe after dinner I can head back in to the garage, once a few more sanity points have been restored.

I would wipe the good side lightly with mineral spirits and let dry then wipe down with clean dry rag. Now the tape should stick pretty good.

I don't think I would do that (upside down) since the other two pieces are in place, color match would probably be off. With the tape on top it should hold together enough to glue it into place, once the glue dries remove it.

Hey mang,

Will do, I get it. Clearly didn't get to it last night. We had nice weather, been busy most of the weekend and really just wanted to relax. However, I did open the curtains and I could see the garage from my bedroom though. That should count for something.
