It happens that 12:00 is my starting position on my Freya for speakers and headphones alike. No surprises.

It is well worth the effort/price to use the two XLR inputs on the Freya if you have any equipment with XLR outputs. Also use the Freya's XLR output to your power amp if you can... way quieter this way with an absolute dead black background.
Ditto and more critically - I run a semi-concealed 2 channel balanced Mogami “stereo” mic cable around the room ending with an ART CleanboxPro and my headphone amp next to my same listening chair as for speakers. As Schiit recommends run the headphone amp at full volume and use the Freya to control the volume. With the SS Fosi amp my LCD’s are inky black as loud as I dare go. Some/most home audio XLRs will take TRS but not vice versa
The XLR play about 6db louder than RCA connections.
I don't know- call Schiit Monday and they'll talk you through it... I use 1-2-3-4... hard to forget that !

Glad you like it! Balanced is the way to go with Schiit equipment. I use XLR cables on everything that has the capability: In my office system I have my Parasound T3 tuner hooked to the Freya with XLR, my Mimir DAC also connected using XLR, the Freya's output is sent to the Lokius EQ via XLR, and Lokius output to Wotan amp is XLR also. bought these really nice xlr cables from fosi audio. they are excellently made. nice heft. great feel. the connectors are dope and fit like a glove. they also have a satin finish you can feel.

these are prolly the nicest cables i own.
the difference in sound is due to using the balanced circuitry in both units, particularly the freya being given a cleaner signal, goggle says.
immediately, i noticed the extra 6db of gain. it plays out as more dynamic. there is more detail (particularly in the mids and upper bass), the highs are clean and clear. much more detail. soundstage improvement.
and black. my system was already dead quiet. yet, it is even quieter somehow.
sposedly, the balanced circuitry lowers tube noise 20db. i didn't notice it before. but it's just, quieter than it already was.

Ok, I found the solution. Factory reset FB settings by power cycling while holding a button. In my case - Mimir - turn the unit off, then power it back up with the Input select button pushed in for a few seconds. All four lights blink, then release the button.
in my paltry experience, definitely worth the try. im glad i did. thanks to @krautmaster's suggestion.
Hopefully your amp is balanced too. If I upgrade to a dac that's balanced, Mimir or Bifrost 3, then I'll go fully balanced as well.
My entire signal path is balanced, from my dac and phono pre (unfortunately, not my cartridge) to my preamp, dsp and amps. Any noise I might experience isn’t coming from my cables or amps.
