Yep, you have to make your own mark on the knob so that your not guessing how loud you have it cranked up !
For XLR inputs my volume knob usually sits at the 11 O'clock position for my preferred listening level.
For RCA connections I need to set it up a bit higher to the 12 O'clock position to get in my comfy zone.

It is well worth the effort/price to use the two XLR inputs on the Freya if you have any equipment with XLR outputs. Also use the Freya's XLR output to your power amp if you can... way quieter this way with an absolute dead black background.

Ditto and more critically - I run a semi-concealed 2 channel balanced Mogami “stereo” mic cable around the room ending with an ART CleanboxPro and my headphone amp next to my same listening chair as for speakers. As Schiit recommends run the headphone amp at full volume and use the Freya to control the volume. With the SS Fosi amp my LCD’s are inky black as loud as I dare go. Not so much with the venerable Lyr (v1) in that setup so it’s bedside with a Bifrost Uber we’re all happy as clams.

The only other equipment that I have with balanced outputs is my Topping E50 II and the distance between that and my Freya is short, maybe two feet of cable length.

The Topping also has TRS jacks as opposed to XLR. Any kind of compromise or compatibility issue there?

Considering that I don't have any issue with noise in my system, can I really expect to hear a difference if I tried that balanced connections? I thought that main application was long cable runs.

Some/most home audio XLRs will take TRS but not vice versa
You could try it and listen to see if there is a difference for you

The XLR play about 6db louder than RCA connections.
