Seeburg Speakers with utah and altec horns

The biggest of those three is the Seeburg DDS-1. I have two of them in my garage. Freakin' huge and heavy. I hear that they were made to accompany Seeburg jukeboxes in discos and other large venues. I hope somebody can chime in on these beasts.

There is a lot of potential with just some crossover mods on the DDS1. There are a lot worse woofers than the utahs inside them. But not worth 875.00, if they could be bought at half that, then they would be worth playing with. Gordon W. has a pair of highly modded DDS1 that people really like.

A minty pair of these just went for $2K plus on fleebay.

PT Barnum was more than right. Nothing about them justifies that price, not even half.

I used to be "into" jukeboxes, and have had close to a dozen DDS1's over the last 20 years or so. Sold my last 3 for $450 and almost felt guilty for ripping off the buyer except by that time the value of the 806A/811 combo was up around 150 each. I suppose all things being relative, the prices/value has increased since i was playing with them. But, the sound and component quality has not.

I'm not aware of many. They in fact have one of the poorest power response curves of any 15 inch woofer i've spent time with, and quickly experience power compression while the Altec horn/driver just keeps getting louder and louder.

Within their own limits they may perform admirably, but they really had no business being in any way associated with "disco" outside of a library setting, or being paired with highly efficient horns that they cannot begin to maintain system balance with at the kind of SPL's a dual 15 inch woofer system should be capable of.

If you had said better, i could strongly agree and rattle a lengthy list off the top of my head.

Gordon's modded DDS-1 can't really be considered that any more

Indeed, he addressed the shortcomings rendering his vastly improved.

Which is why I passed on a pair for sale out in Nebraska one time. I was planning to pick them up on the way to Jay's, but thought about the weight and how I was gonna move 'em. No thanks.

Depending on the vintage, they were loaded with Altec 802B/511 and 803 woofers or 802C/511 and 416 woofers.

They're not "crappy", they're just less sensitive due to a smaller magnet slug, they have a difficult time pushing extended HF response down the length of the larger horns(811/511) throats, on smaller horns in a balanced system they can be as wonderful as the 802, IMO&E.

If you're running the stock utah woofers, there is enough sensitivity difference between the woofers and the 806 that an improved network with some EQ could be implemented, that would smooth and perceivably extend their response a good bit.

The cabs are marvelous. Very dynamic sound. Set I heard had a bit of midrange dropoff...could just be the old caps in there...

Very dependent on amplification. Some amps sounded like an armadilobag...

Bought 4 of these double 15" woofers from Olson Electronics for $200 a piece, put better high SPL woofers in, stacked them 2 on a side, bolted together and removing the bottom 811 horns, totally remodeled the cabinet fronts with black slat mica and the rest with white mica, mounted on industrial casters. Nothing compared to the sound using a Mattes amp!
