Setton BS 5500

Yes, vintagestereo outbid ExJxC and won.:scratch2: :headscrat :dunno: VS, would you mind making those scans like ExJxC said he would do, so I can get the ones for the RS-660? Just talked to my uncle again a couple days ago and he promised NOT to pitch it but is going to give it to me next time I see him.:yes:


Also, I was thinking---was there ever an AS-5500 made? We know there is a 3300 and a 1100, but it wouldnt be necessary for Setton to make an AS-5500 if they also wanted to sell separates of the same power, if you know what Im saying.:scratch2:
 
Ah good. I think your uncle was threatening to dump the RS 660 to get you motivated.

Good question on the AS 5500. The BS 5500 listed for $800 and the RS 660 was around $1000, IIRC. So, to add the preamp to the BS 5500 would have put the price very close to the RS 660 and that doesn't make sense, positioning-wise. I bet those who considered the AS went for the RS instead and those who were truly separate-philes went for the BS-PS-TUS setup.

I've have some time tomorrow to do some clean up work on the Setton web site. Would love to have as many pics as possible, including some of the RS-440 and 220.

First shot of my RS220

My 33.00 dollar find.
Note the burned out power light.
Will have repaired when I find a manual.
I may have case re-veneered as well. Otherwise unit is in excellent shape, and sounds very nice.

TUS600 dimensions

The unit is exactly the same size as my AS3300.
The dimensions listed by the manufacturer is:
500 (W) x 164 (H) x 295 (D) mm.
The faceplate measurements in inches: 19-11/16 wide x 6-1/2 high.
What are the dimensions of your BS5500?
Are they close to the TUS600?

Thanks! The BS measures the same as your TUS. They will look fabulous stacked. I suspect the PS preamp is going to be very hard to find.

It's nice to see Setton information on the web again.
I would like to contribute more pictures including pictures of the specifications page of the AS3300 and TUS600 from my manuals.
I will also take more pictures of my RS220 and would like to help keep this site going if there are costs involved.
I still remember your old site and was sad to see it go away.

Monteman--AWESOME AVATAR!!! Thanks for the site Chris, also, I did a google on every Setton component and found indication that every one exists except for the AS-5500. Im pretty sure that it never existed. There were no google results(I found at least 15 for each of the other component, like old auctions for manuals, etc) for the AS-5500.

Monteman--when you bought your 3300, do you remember seeing a 5500 for sale anywhere?:scratch2:

Found a posting that stated "the name Setton came from the French importer, Jacky Setton".

Also, there was a comment in another post indicating they thought the gear was private label built by Pioneer for Setton, but I have no other independent verification of that. Food for thought. Anybody think to compare this gear with Pioneer Spec type and see if there are any similarities in build or structure?

Bart: The BS and SPEC are not even in the same category. The SPEC 2 and 4 are stuffed full of monster caps and there is a hulking toroid.
 
Wonder why Setton's stuff was so much $$$$. Even w/pierre design, it was still a lot. Spec 4 MSRP--$795. BS-5500 MSRP--$800. Obviously, the spec is a better amp, but Id still definately rather have the BS--IMO the coolest amp ever.:yes:
 
Low production runs, Cardin's royalty, and Setton's standing as a marketing company only, all drove up costs contributing to higher MSRP. In addition to contracting out the design and manufacture, Setton probably had to contract out sales and distribution as well. Too many fingers in the pie.

BTW, watching the warning lights on the BS blink out one by one is very cool.
