I am normally a foam shaving cream user. However this time around I bought gel, and remembered how much I dislike it. The stuff gets caught between your fingers, it needs to be moved around to where it lathers, and is just a plain hassle. Perhaps it works a bit deeper in your beard, but my preference is for foam.

I stopped shaving years ago and now just use an electric buzzer to trim and clean up my neck, but when I was shaving I used the the same safety razor that my dad gave me in the mid 80's and shaving soap with a brush. Safety razor blades are super cheap and give a really good shave and so is shaving soap and a bar lasts for ever. It was a better shave and hardly cost anything.
 
Agree with above. Single blade safety razor is the best there is, at least for me - anything else is more irritating and also if I don't religiously shave every morning even double blade razors clog up quickly. Actually the best shaving goo I've ever found is the stuff in a bottle that my girlfriend bought me from Lush.

Wife got me a serious quality boar hair brush, and shaving soap cakes, and nice safety razor. Just ran out of soap after about 5 years or so. Work fantastically, and seconded on applying a little hair conditioner to the neck (at least) because it really helps those of us with tender skin.
 
Cremo and a Merkur Futur with Feather blades...I have a bunch of original Gillette razors of all kinds, open comb, closed comb, adjustables, TTO, three piece, some from Schick (even some of their injector razors, meh), etc., all in excellent to mint condition and the Futur is the best razor I have used in 50 years of shaving....it's an expensive razor, but you make it up in much cheaper blade costs, yes even ordering the Feathers via Amazon.

The Chinese clone, Qshave, is nearly as good for a lot less.

I always wanted a Merkur Vision but they've quit making them and their prices are astronomical for a razor...I saw one being used in an early episode of the reboot of Battlestar Galactica and started searching for what it was...

For shaving creams Cremo is my first choice, Proraso second, Kiss My Face third...anything in a can, like Barbasol, Colgate, Foamy, etc., a distant fourth.

Old school all the way! I use a 1961 Gillette Slimline Adjustable double-edged razor with Wilkinson Sword Classic or Gillette Silver Blue blades. I've used shaving gels, foams, creams, and soaps. I prefer Colonel Conk glycerine shaving soap with a silvertip badger brush. Other than initial expense, all these supplies are ridiculously inexpensive. Blades cost around 20 cents apiece when purchased 100 at a time and shaving soap is under 4 dollars and lasts for months. Post shave I use Pinaud Clubman After Shave and Nivea Sensitive Skin Post Shave Balm. These too are very reasonably priced. It takes a bit of time but there's nothing like the feeling of a close BBS shave!
