If you're in a hurry to shave, this stuff is very good and very cheap < $2. Excellent for those with sensitive skin.

I have been wet shaving since I was in college. My grandfather taught me to shave with a STRAIGHT RAZOR, and a cup of shaving soap with a brush. Since then I have been a fan of the straight razor, but will use a DE (double edge) razor when I need a nice shave but don't have time to luxuriate in my shaving den.

I do not use gels nor creams with the exception of TUBE PASTE CREAM like Palmolive. Proraso and Cremo. When I'm in a hurry I hot towel the face, hand apply Cremo or Proraso or Palmolive and get a decent shave with a DE razor.

Otherwise, I ALWAYS use SHAVING SOAP. Tallow Soaps mostly, and mostly hand crafted from companies like Stirling Soap Company that makes the exquisite Iced Pineapple (among others). Prepping the face with proper washing, and getting the whiskers prepared for shaving by applying a quality soap with a quality brush is the only way to go for me if I want a truly BBS (Baby Butt Smooth) shave.

I have a large shaving den and it constantly rotates as I have over 100 soaps and about 20 brushes with 10 or so DE Razors and 30 or so STRAIGHT razors. And about 30 bottles of assorted aftershaves and skin cremes. I can't show them all, but here is a sample;

Dayum. That’s quite the collection.

I switch between Haslinger shaving soap and Taylor of Old Bond Street cream. Razor is nothing fancy, just a simple Edwin Jagger.

Can’t do those 20-blade razors with the foam, it tears my face up something awful.
 
I use gel, but the only way I seem to get a close comfortable shave is after a hot shower and scrubbing my face down with hair conditioner, then shaving right away. Anyway, that works for me. I think it is a combo of the steam and prepping with the conditioner. I just condition my face when I condition my hair. Using a Harry's razor and blades right now, but I've gone thru a variety of razors over the years.

Plus 1 for hair conditioner. Discovered it back in the late 90's when I was stuck in a hotel and forgot my shaving cream. Never went back!

Thank you. I've been collecting and broadening my shaving den for many years. It's still a work in progress, as all passion hobbies are, like Audio equipment, yes?

I am a big fan of Edwin Jagger razors. They are IMO, exceptionally built razors with a favorable price point. My favorite DE razor is probably my Jagger DE89. It's spectacular with ultra sharp blades like Feather because of the modest blade reveal. The Merkur 34c is probably 2nd. Basically the same mild blade reveal but with a longer handle. I personally think the Jagger is more robust and a bit better built than the Merkur. Both will certainly do the job. When I pair either with a Feather blade, the combination matches my best straight razor shaves.

Both Haslinger and Taylor of OBS are extremely good for gliding your razor over the skin. I have them in my arsenal. You have chosen "wisely" indeed.

I have used hair conditioner mixed with soap in hotel rooms when my luggage was lost and I was without my beloved travel straight razor and DE razor. I had to resort to a free hotel provided disposable razor and make do with a homebrew hotel room cream/soap concoction. Hair Conditioners have plenty of polymers to give you some "glide" when you shave, that's for sure. That's why I like Cremo when I'm in a rush or don't have anything else to use. It performs like it has extra polymers in the mix.

Someone mentioned Proraso. I'm a serious fan. They are the Gillette of Italy, but IMO, produce much better quality shaving soaps, creams and tonics. If I had to choose only ONE brand worldwide, it would be Proraso. Here is one shave I had with my Jagger DE89;

Still, it’s impressive. I tend to just try a couple of things until I find something I like and then stick with it. The DE89 is the Jagger razor that I have. I started with an el cheapo that didn’t even quite hold the blade straight. Then I had an old adjustable Gillette that I hated. I did a bit of research which led me to believe that the Jagger was kind of a best buy—better quality than most everything at the price point. I quite like it and haven’t had the impulse to try anything else.

Same with the Haslinger and Tayler of OBS. Tried a couple of things and really liked those and stuck with them. The only thing I’ve tried more extensively is blades. I use Feather most of the time, but I tried probably eight or ten things before I landed on those. And I still try out or use others occasionally.
 
I've been shaving with a 1961 Gillette Fatboy for quite a few years. The blades I can easily get have been deteriorating and I've got to try some of those Feathers. I don't like gel and still use Gillette Foamy, but I think they changed the formula recently. Anybody else use the stuff and noticed it's slightly different?
 
I haven't used shaving cream for years to shave with. I shave in the shower and find using hair conditioner better than using shaving cream. Provides a smoother shave and conditions the skin.

I remember as a young boy in the 1960's watching Grandpa use a straight razor. He told me it was his Marine Corp training at Paris Island that started it before shipping off to Europe for trench warfare in 1917. Then he said we had to learn to do it dry too! No way, no straight razor for me. They'd find me and think it was suicide, lol!
 
Mercur 34c, Williams Shaving Soap and 3 drops of shave secret on a cheap badger brush after prep with a glycerin bar and the brush. I use Mercur or Elkaline blades, which seem best with my lighter beard. I like to smooth on an almond sized drop of Nivea Men after and let that sit a few minutes before I dry off.
 
Before I get in the shower I dry-shave my sideburns and under my nose. I've gotten to where I can finish shaving in the shower without a mirror, just by touch.

When I said I've shaved in the shower for over 40-years, that's with no mirror and no prep work. I think I know my face well enough by now and it's very easy.
