I had a 5 gal tank when a kid, & in it lived my good buddy, Mr Morah.a 2 spot gourami. He got so he'd follow my finger up & down the walls of the tank, & would even sometimes nip my pinkie if I'd stick it in the tank. My Mama said that dern fish had more personality than some ppl she knew. He lived for almost 2 years, I was absolutely beside myself when he died after Xmas holiday, 1967. We had a state funeral for him, most of the kids "Knew" him& were torn up, too.. Funny how a kid can get so torn up over a5 gal tank fish, but I sure did.. But it was kinda neat how he'd take his feelers & follow my finger up & down the aquarium glass.. Yeah, I'm WEIRD-So sue me...

I've done something a nature boy in a wheelchair should have done 20 years ago!
Still very much a work in progress, but already it's kept us off the TV!
I can zone out for a couple hours, just watching the fish, not to mention 4 frogs, 5 tadpoles, and 9 crayfish.
Theres 350 Rosy Fathead Minnows and 288 golden shiners, both bait fish, but mesmerizing schoolers, and CHEAP! ($14/100 for Rosies; $110 overnighted for ~288 shiners) Theres also 5 goldfish, a concession to Julie.
I need to update this. There's a fence back around the garden/patio, and planting is going on.
A triangular pergola with a bamboo roof is being erected (half for us, half to shade the pond some. In direct sunlight it was getting pretty tempid)
When done, it will be a wonderfully peaceful space.

My wife just bought a 120 liter aquarium. She had a 240 liter about 10 years ago, but gave up the hobby.
Anyway, there are no fish in the new tank yet, and she decided it´s too small. So now we ordered a 180 tank.
I´ll post pics when it´s set up.

I had a 125 gallon saltwater but unfortunately, I had to shut it down.
I had it for several years, however spending time away from home for work and summer vacations was getting hard to keep things in balance.
The livestock went back to the store I bought them from and the tank itself was given to a friend for a bunch of new audiophile vinyl.

I have a tall 15 gallon. It's been running continuously for at least 30 years. I just keep goldfish...currently 3. They do very well, usually live about 10 years or more.
As a child i had kept tropical fish, but they never had the longevity of a Goldfish. And this way i don't have to worry about the heater during a power outage.
So here's my very basic setup....minimal effort and much fun. They're capable of making quite a bit of noise when I walk past the tank and not feed them.

Great story, Sandy!
Never had a fish tank as a kid. Had a 30 gallon when I was in my 20s. Started with a 10 gallon hex tank with tropical fish. Then moved up to the 30 gallon with fancy goldfish. The goldfish lasted years! Moved around in my younger days so the tank was Gone With The Wind.

I could watch fish for hours too. They say it lowers your blood pressure a bit.

My cousin who's a doctor had a home with two saltwater fish tanks. One tank was floor to ceiling! Had a small room behind for all the stuff required. Had a hard time selling the house!

Yes, goldfish is what I used to have. Much easier than tropical to keep. Thanks for posting your tank!

This wasn't my aquarium or nothin', but its still a neat story..About 15 miles from where I live, is/was this place called Pressman's Home, from the 20s til 1967 it was the home of the North American Printing Pressmen's & assistants Union of North America. They had several offices, several other classrooms, houses, a chapel, 2 hotels, & at least one restaurant that was outta this world good. You hired in over there, they ran you thru a course where you learned EVERYTHING there was to know about the Graphic Arts as they were back then. The Bossman was a guy named Maj. George Leonard Berry, & they had a well-deserved rep as a "Gentlemen's Union, run by Gentlemen.". How quaint. Major had a goldfish farm on his private property, & altho he was long gone when I was a kid, the goldfishes-or their descendants were still around.. They were "Celestial" goldfishes, their eyes stuck out from their heads at impossible angles & stuff. I haven't been over there for a few years, I need to trek over there & see if any of 'em are still left. The Home is one of those bizarrre, weird as hell places that shouldn't by all rights be there, yet it resolutely IS.

Sandy, I knew the goldfish you were talking about. Those are the strange ones where their eyes are looking up. Never had any of those but I had Black Moor, Calico, & Veil Tail goldfishes.
Yes, you should go over and see if those goldfish are still there! Thanks for sharing!

And now the questions come-What kind of Hell must these poor things live/exist in ? Are they self aware enuf to realise how utterly Effed up they are ? Do they have other wonderful problems, like blindness? I've seen 'em, & they can barely swim in a straight line,w/o shaking to & fro, violently. Yeah, I know, they're just fishies, but would any of US wanna live like that ? Me, I think they're grotesque as hell lookin'. Poor things...
yea, they can be strange looking and move very slowly. But they don't know anything else. Even regular goldfish have limited vision, they can only see from certain angles...any food directly in front of them is ignored.
I'm sure Celestial fish can live healthy lives as long as they're kept with their own kind. Otherwise the fast fish eat and the slow ones go hungry.

That Fish pond might be a neat place for a fish big shot type to check out. Major Berry died in 1948, those celestials haven't had any interaction since then, if there are any still left. There were some still around in the late '60s, that's when I 1st saw them. Again, one of those weird things that shouldn't be there, but I remember it quite vividly. There was a professionally produced color film short from 1964 that told all about Pressmen's Home that had no less a big shot than Chet Huntley narrating it. You can look it up on YouTube. Pressmen's Home actually was a pretty neat place, celestial goldfish & all...I've always thought there was a good chance the joint was haunted..Lotsa guys died over there, You worked in graphic arts back then.you stood a good chance of contracting tuberculosis. The Union ran a sanatarium for years & years over there to help guys out. but quite a few never made it, and died alone.
A friend of mine had an outdoor Koi pond. It didn't last too long.
Between the bright colored fish and relatively small enclosure they were easy pickings for hawks flying overhead.

There are no fish in it yet. We are still having problems with the plants not wanting to grow.Nice!
We tested for Fe tonight and it was at 0.0. We just added some iron fertilizer.
I´ll post pics when things are going good, and we have fishies
