Dick - Did manage to scan in, but in a .tif format. Large file - 27meg. But, sent it along to you via e-mail attachment. Hope your server/firewall will allow. Let me know if it arrived. If not, check your spam file, etc. I'll try to do something to get it into .pdf or JPeg is this didnt' work.
 
We've reached 500+ posts. Thinks that merits a Sony Forum.

Anyway....Dick - I've shrunk to 220kb, so you should have as an e-mail attachment. Still can't get it shifted to either JPeg or .pdf.

Yes, I would like to see there be a Sony forum, or no brand forums at all, but the management seems to have boxed themselves into a corner that they can neither defend nor expand to more brands nor to shrink the number of brand forums.
So the status quo seems to be where we will remain for quite some time. I can live with it as I scan via 'new posts' so I miss little. :yes:

Got me a Sony TA-N7B (that needs a lot of work, but the VFET's are fine) and a perfectly fine TA-E86B (until I can find me a TA-E88B, if ever...). Can't wait to get these babies up and running :)

Congratulations! Once of Sony's finest. I have that same preamp, but have some work to do on its matching power amp. Lots of good info here http://www.thevintageknob.org/index.html. Check in both the Sony and VFET sections. Axel, TVK's owner, has a TA-N7B or two, as his main amp(s). EchoWars is one of our primary VFET experts, as is ilizmn. Where are you located?

STOFFIE welcome to AK. Those units look super. If you have to stack the units could you please put the preamp ( I assume much lighter) on top.
 
Same era and same styling (knobs, switches, faceplate, etc.) so am sure it is related. But someone would have to pull the schematics and compare. I'll send you the schematics if you want to do so (PM me your e-mail). Most likely has similar features to the TA-2000 and TA-3200F preamp/amp, as well.
 
I have a 6060f and noticed the styling was similar to the 1120. In addition they are both 65 watts output. I was thinking of buying a 1120 but on thinking through the 1120 might be the amplifier section of the 6060f. Thank you for the offer B-2 but that won't be necessary. I believe a 1120 now would be an overkill. By the way the 6800 I bought from you I moved to the bed room. It is connected to Sound Dynamics RT3 speakers. The sound is astounding. The wife is ecstatic. It is the first time I have heard her comment on the sound quality of my many hifi equipment.
 
Just a guess, but I suspect the 1120 is probabaly related to the 3120 half size amp meant for use in threes with the TA2000 and TA4300 frequency divider and possibly the STR6120. I'd also guess the STR6200F is related to the TA3200F amp.


Finally got the 6200 done: cleaned, relamped and bias and balance set to factory specs. Moved it out to my shop and hooked it up to the Kirksaeters.
Nice, nice, very,very nice :D

Here's a shot showing that little red light in the middle of the tuner dial that warms the cockles of every early Sony afficionado's heart. I can turn that little light on with nothing more than a tuned station and one finger on one antenna terminal :thmbsp:

I have been an avid Sony fan for a long time, but never really found much online about their vintage stuff (too bad I never came across this site...), until I stumbled upon an Ebay auction for some of their fabled ESPRIT gear (actually a TA-E900 and two TA-N900's, that alltogether went for over $3000!!!). The auction had a link to Axel's site. Gotta love that site, I've been reading there every day since and I'm sure he has tons more to post.

I've been in touch with Axel and Mirko about the N7 and it does need a lot of work (4 new 22000µF caps as one has burst at some point in the past, new bipolar transistors, new fusible resistors at the VFET gates, full recap, new heatpads and some other minor things). Quite a daunting task if you ask me. Good thing I have a service manual on the way.

Next thing after the overhaul is to find some APM's... or some SS-G7's... (yeah that'll be easy...not!)

you probably found the most active forum regarding vintage Sony.

The "center of gravity" seems to be a little bit on the receiver side here, but that´s only, because the good vintage separates from Sony are so rare (in the U.S.) ...

I just made a professional power amplifier comparison test last weekend, involving some "legends" from JBL, Crest etc. and my modified TA-N7B for reference.

Only a short comment:

Oh my god !!!!! :music:
The difference between the TA-N7B and the rest was much bigger than between the speakers we tested ...

OK, the test was not fair ....

I can't wait to get my N7 up and running, if it wasn't for the damn money.

Think I'll have to borrow some money somewhere because I have just located a TA-E88... aarrgh ! :scratch2:
 
Am wondering how the TA-8550 would compare to the TA-N7B? Anyone done that comparison? Both VFET and rated at 100wpc.

And, my apologies to Mirko for not listing him along with EW and ilizmn as our VFET tech experts. I knew better.

Congratulations, Dick! Beautiful sight! :yes: Now if Brian can just get his going we will have three here. Amazing just how "right" these old Sony receivers sound. Wife has been bugging me so I bought a Yamaha YP-801 TT for use with mine in the LR set up. She's really tickled.

too bad, that the most intersting units come up all together.

Glenn, since I own (and love) both, the TA-N7B and TAN-8550, I can say the following about them:

My TA-N7B sounds for me just like a short piece of copper wire with gain should sound. It is able to reveal even the smallest detail, without being analytic or cold at all. The soundstage is very well defined. I figured out some modifications of it, which solve the reliability problem and fix that slightly "too smooth sound", which seems to be there on every (old) stock TA-N7B. For me it is one of the best three power amplifiers I have ever heard.

The TAN-8550 instead has the typical V-Fet sound:

Huge soundstage, some kind of very empathic sound, which shines on trumpets and female voices (I call it a tube amp without the pain :D ). The control on background details like brushed cymbals, fret noises, clapping etc. nevertheless is not as perfect as with the TA-N7. The TA-8650´s power amplifier section is almost identical, but sounds a little bit more open.

To bad, that my recently acquired Yamaha B-1 has two bad power V-Fets, I´m really wondering, how it will sound compared to the TOTL Sonys. I´m pretty sure it will be very comparable to the TAN-8550 (perhaps with a little bit more muscle :yes: ).

Did anybody ever compared a TAN-8550 to a B-1 ?
