A very nice collection there mertol. What's the story on those headphones? They look to be either electret or electrostatic. Don't think I've seen anything on those before. What's the model number and how do they sound?
Thanks, I think I was a little bit lucky.
The headphones are ECR-500 and they are electret. I do own a small wintage headphone collection that includes some pioneers, akais, older sony's, a senhaisser HD650, BayerDynamic 880 , a AKG 340, Wharfedale DD1, Pioneer monitor 10II.
Before ECR-500 Iwas mainly using the AKG and Pioneer Monitor 10 II. And in most of the deciplines Pioneer was unmatched. I still think Pioneer can outperform AKG 340 very easly.
And Sony ECR-500 beats the Pioneer as easly as Pioneer beats the AKG. Considering that the headphones were made around 75-77, I am unable to believe how good they sound as most of the older headphones always lack sometinhg. Also keep in mind that I never had the chance to listen to a high end Grado or Stax.
Most of the time the weeknes of the electret designs are at the bass depertmant however Sony plays the bass like there is no tomorrow. The midrange is very open and treble is there with a lot of defination. I cant say that the ECR is that last word on details but it can be considered to be very detailed.
Anyway it's the only headphone that I can continue to listen all night long.
I am currently using it connected to the Aurex System 15 and I plan on moving it to the Sony rig soon.
PS: Yesterday I went to drift store, and put my hands on a few magazines laying on a older Akai RTR . Then for some unknown reason I lifted the magazines up and I saw a bunch of old hifi magazines. Then again for some realy unknown reason I lifted them up too. And there it was in mint condition, 1977 Sony catalog in full color. 50 pages of Sony vintage and it is the only Sony catalog I have seen that do not include the later TA-F7 , TA-N7 series components. I will post some pictures tonight. And I will try to scan it this week so that I can share it everybody.
