Show Us Your Utahs!

over the past few months, i seem to have acquired a pair or two of utah drivers. a search of AK and google didn't turn up much info on utah, so i thought a utah thread wouldn't be all that bad of an idea.

so here is the place to show off your precious utahs to the world!

i'd love to see pictures of utah speakers, whether complete cabinets or just individual drivers.

also, if you have any specs to share, that would be great!

i'll start off this show with what i have.

model HF12PC-2 12" full range

these are 12" full range drivers. they have whizzer cones. they are very efficient! good strong bass, pretty nice mids, a little lacking in the high frequencies, but not bad for what they are. these are rated 8 ohms. the codes are 328345 on both. i can't make out the numbers on the back of the cones. they weigh about 5 pounds each.

model H208XC tweeter horns

these are about 2 x 6 inch metal horns. they are rated 8 ohms. codes are 328252 on both of these. i'm guessing these are cast iron, but don't know for sure. they are fairly heavy. they get really loud! they are great sounding horns, but do ring a little. i'm guessing they go up to around 15-16 kilohertz. i've driven these with an onkyo m-5150 power amp (150 wpc) with no complaints.

Cabinets are in so-so condition. Mostly good, but some corner damage and medium to minor scratches. I'm going to refinish the veneer and install new binding posts. Will post more pics if I ever set them up correctly somewhere.

model HO68XC mid horns

these are about 4 x 10 metal horn mids. they weigh about 2 pounds each. codes are 328270 on both of these. they are highly efficient, get extremely loud, and have also handled my 150 wpc onkyo with ease. they excel reproducing percussion and do a nice job with vocals. they could stand some dampening to reduce ringing.

model V12JP16 12" woofers

these are alnico magnet, low wattage woofers. when i unpacked these and saw the cheesy baskets, i didn't expect much from them, but was pleasantly surprised. the bass was really tight, amazingly deep, and they took a lot more power than i expected them to. they are very wide range, and the mids are outstanding! vocals and percussion sound wonderful! the cones on these are deep, with a bowl shape to them. they look to have 1 1/2 inch voice coils. best i can tell, the numbers on the back of the cones are 307 3 and the eic codes are 328304 on both of them.

model CS8JC-W 8" full range

i believe this is designed for guitar amps. i only have the one, but have an eye out for another. it appears to be ceramic magnet with maybe a one inch voice coil. i haven't played with it much to tell about the sound. codes are 328319-1. the number on the back of the cone appears to be 782 4, but the 3rd digit is blurred and partially missing. i'd guess a 10 to 15 ounce magnet.

And what started me on AK was this pile. Those are 4 15" monster Utahs and all the horns I believe are utah as well.

holy cow, kfa888! i thought i had it bad. man would i love to have those 15's and horns in your last picture! i believe those are the same horns that i have.

how do those celesta's sound? i've been tempted to pick up a pair.

Just OK. I sold them.

I think I have all the rest except the blue mid. I think the horns are the same as yours. Might get around to doing something with them one day. I have a small pile of other Magnavox and other brand horns laying around as well. None of them have I used for anything

- I'd be really interested in how you implemented your Utah horns and what you really think of them. I figured they would be OK at best so i never put any effort into doing anything with them. Those blue 12" woofers sound real good and would like to use them in an all Utah 3 way with the horns mainly just because i have them. have several doner cabs as well. I really need to get that Dayton woofer tester so i have a starting point and idea.

i've tried the horns with a pair of utah 15's i have, but didn't like the synergy. until today, they were in the cabinet in my avatar. i plan to use that complement in a slightly larger cabinet. more details here:

doubt it . more likely zinc .... it weighs about the same,
but casts much nicer , and at a much lower temp in an
injection die . CI castings must almost always be machined ,as they are typically very rough coming out of the sand mold.

even aluminum cannot hold the intricacies or finish of zinc when die cast, although zinc is brittle and has low strength.

these are NIB 8" p.a. speakers. they have whizzer cones, 10 ounce ceramic magnets, and are fairly weighty for their size. they are rated 30 watts, 8 ohms. i bought these to use as mids with a pair of 15's i have, but their efficiency is too high for the woofers. they have a pretty wide response range and produce very high volume levels. codes are 328343-1 on both of these. i'd estimate the voice coils at about 1 1/4 inches.

Man I wish I still had the pics of the one`s I used to have made some cabs with 4
FR12`s with two 2x4`s and a very large 4x 12 I think with crossovers all purchased at a little place called B&A or Burstein & Applebee. This really brings back some memories!!

got them. problem is, i had to turn them almost all the way down. i suppose block resistors would help, but the orange 12" fulls are about right and sound really good with the 15's. i'm searching for a nice pair of utah tweeters to go with them. i've seen some that resemble the foster tweeters used in zenith allegro speakers, i'd like to find a pair and give them a try. i don't see a lot of utah tweeters on that auction site. maybe they are easily blown. most of the reviews i've read on utah systems say that treble is lackluster, i've only heard the horns i have.
