I didn't have the Utahs, but I did have a pair of Goodmans in similar configuration in the early 60's. They were 12" coaxial speakers with "whizzer" cones. The whizzer cone was an interesting concept. A small cone speaker in the center of the main speaker that reacted to high frequencies, without an electronic crossover. It just vibrated when hit with high frequencies. The speakers were mounted in 24"x14" x12" bass reflex enclosures, had 16 ohm impedance and they sounded great! I drove them with a Harmon Kardon Award A500 20 watt/channel tube amp and listened to records via my Garrard AT-6 turntable. When I moved to AR 4x speakers, I gave them to my mother-in-law and she loved them until she passed away in 2000. That whizzer cone was amazingly simple, but really worked well.

the collection continues to grow. these are the latest acquisition. eic code is 328352. the ceramic magnets are very heavy. looks like an inch and a half to two inches on the voice coils.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread here, but these things are too beautiful to *not* share!

My grandfather built custom cabinets for these a looong time ago, and I just pulled them. They are pristine- and the finish on these baskets and magnet cover is just gorgeous.

Can't find any info on them anywhere.

after my Lg Advents and before my Janszen 'stats' in 74,or 1975 I had a pair of Utah 10" 2-ways in my dorm room. found them to be a bit 'tubby' in the bass with nice mids and 'soft' in the highs. Had them a few months , they werent too bad. Nice cab's.

Mp-3000

I work in Huntington Ind. Though I would never live there. Three months ago an ad appears on Craigs list for MP-3000 speakers. I knew most of the available knowledge about Utah. I had owned some WD-90's which I refinished , recaped and sold to my best friend. But I knew nothing about the MP-3000's At that time I had no extra money and was headed out of town for the holidays.
Last week they reappear. I'd just finished my taxes and felt better about the budget.
The seller said he bought the speakers about 8 years ago but hadn;t used them lately because they were too big. Yes it was a small house. I had borrowed my wife's hatchback because I knew I wouldn't be able to fit these in my 2-seater.
Got them home and safely into the basement.
The cabinets are in OK shape. Usual gouges, water marks and a few small chips missing from the veneer. The woofers are in very good shape and really put out the sound, The mid-range was OK. The only way I could tell if the tweeters we doing anything was by unscrewing them from the cabinet and disconecting a wire. Very feeble sound. I'm now waiting for UPS to deliver 2 4UF and 2 8,2 UF caps. The crossovers are a little more complicated than the standard Utah crossover.

A question here. Nearly every picture I see of Utah horn tweeters shows a styrofoam cap on the back of the tweeter. I don't have those caps.
What are they for? Do I need them?

I;ve tried to include pictures that are different from the other MP-3000 photoes here on AK. The two pieces of fiberglass are where I found them when I opened them up. One tweeter had the wires soldered to its terminals.

Just out of curiosity, what are you using for amplification? That could have something to do with it. But also, they probably also need some time to blow out the cobwebs (It was like that with all my Wharfedales... They got much-better after a few days of playing music through them). But as you said, it could simply be that they need a recap.

I've never owned Utahs, but I've stumbled onto a few pairs here and there in my travels (mostly alnico ones) and always wondered how they sound in an optimum setup (I figured the sound is somewhere between Altec and Frazier). Those cabs are beefy as hell, and I know those old Utah woofers are very-well-made.

I can't help with the previous speakers but since this thread is revived I thought I'd show my Utahs :thmbsp: I had these in boxes since the early 80's. The foams were trash when I finally decided to build my teenage dream project. At the age of 50'ish this is where I finally used them. I sure do love em!!!:yippy::yippy::yippy:

Utah mp 3000

Just scored a pair of utah mp 3000 at a garage sale pretty damn cheep anyone have pics of the grills cloth or foam color ? Id like to restore the grills they sound amazing

No one has my precious 12" + double tweeter Utah. But then again I've never found a mate for it.
