Show us your V-Fet / SIT gear

I need to hear one someday, here in Romania i have no chance, maybe back in UK :) i'm curios if this design and this output devices can beat the sound of a Hitachi 2SK135 and 2SJ50 Lateral Mosfets.
Eventually, a B1 might make it to Romania.

If you place the the B-1 vfets on a table next to the Hitachi mosfets, the Yamaha vfets win every time. They are much bigger ;)

as far as how they sound....actually neither sound at all ;)

The most frequent downside many cite for their reluctance to adopt active speakers is the inability to choose the amplification. It need not be. If one owns many individual pieces of power amplification it can merely be a case of procuring an active crossover and routing some leads to the drivers. It's a diy dream.
correct about the use the favorite amps and also about the fact that the choice of speakers is also a variable.

I only settled with the KRKs because they are quality and I got a 12 month old pair which had probably only been used for less than 100 hours. They were studio monitors for a failed studio. The owner was selling everything. I got them for a bit more than 25% of new price. The purchase was made with the thought that I could recoup if I didn't like them. I've never owned or used anything that was as responsive to the input signal. This bodes well when the input is hifi quality. All analogue. No ADC to DAC conversion. Mono amps to each driver. Class A discrete to 10 watts. Class AB to 140 watts. KRK got a dedicated hifi amp designer to custom spec the amplification. Not off the shelf. They are just chameleon like. That's their number one signature. There might be many much better amps and speaker combinations. First I've listened to enough gear at many price points to know that they are great for even full price. My champagne tastes at sparkling white wine budget means I lean on my experience to wring value out of what I buy. I only want overacheivers because I can't afford the majority of components which do it well enough.

I got lucky because the KRKs came along after I got the best turntable I'd ever owned. The KRKs love this system. A cartridge change has things better than ever so the reward for taking the road less travelled hifi wise has lately been a lottery winner for me. I have sincerely said that I am grateful to have had the privelege of living with these components. That is satisfaction with one's selections.

Steve, your insights about active systems are at most helpful. The active crossover and braking out access to the NS-2000 drivers so they could be used in an active mode, is on my bucket list :)

Side note: Last summer during my travel through Europe (and hopefully this summer/fall again) I had the opportunity to listen to some serious active systems. I also did listen to some passive systems as well. My opinion is that both have their merits and I am still convinced that a passive system (a good one) would have no issues keeping up with best of active. My future experiences might alter my current opinion but this is where I am at now.

,,I have a car amp that says V-fet on it :) That does not make it a v-fet amp.''

Indeed 90% of car amplifiers are stated ,,Mosfet Amplifier'' but has nothing to do with it,the outputs are pure complementary bipolar transistors :) the only part where the mosfets are used usually IRFZ44N is in the inverter stage to provide the necessary symetrical supply :) the amp market is quite tricky :)
No, actually this is what I meant:

I checked the internals and schematics of Yamaha B-1 amplifier...damn i'm amazed they did that in 1970's....that amplifier is a masterpiece, and 320w r.m.s of pure undistorted power...that's a thing...simply amazing....
The B1 is not about raw power but about finesse and about providing a superb listening experience. The amp circuit is as exotic as its sound. As far as raw power output, it is rated at 150wps into 8 ohms, but every one that I tested was well above 200wpc stereo.

Nice, that’s a good start and courageous of you for coming out of the closet.

Ok, all this beauty got me curious, just won me a Yamaha B-3 on Yahoo Auction Japan.
Will be a few months before I have it in my hands.
Looking forward to it!
I have only been restoring Sansui's up to now after studying them intensively, so will need some advice when the time comes.
The first none Sansui amplifier I will have. I think the V-Fet amplifiers are an important part of the audio amplifier history.

Speechless -- and That's way rare for me !
What a great thread with morning coffee.
WOW!

I will say; Rotty's Rule! :)

Congrats.
Best resto thread for b-3 posted by @zaibatsu.
Post your questions there. Some of us would likely respond.

And since we are talking B3s......

Haha, that is probably how I am going to end up!
If i like it I will need at least 3 of them ( 3-way active cross-over ). Last week there was a C-1 and a B-1 in mint shape on YAJ, almost did it, but decided to first try the V-Fet out with the B-3.
Will be continued . . .

you mean end up like this?

Mhh, don't know if I have the space for that. Nice collection you have there!
I know that I started 3 years ago with 2 integrated Sansui's, now I have 10 integrated, 4 pre-ampliers ( not counting monaural tubes ), 8 power-amplifers. And some more mono tube poweramps and receivers from the mid 50's mostly for historical value.
Will see how this ends.

Once you hear a vfet amp, I can predict how it ends.

My room has “cleaned up” since that photo and others’ have filled

I have a feeling you can !
To be honest, I have had an eye on the V-Fet amplifiers for a while already. In a way it is sad that they ( Yamaha, etc. ) didn't continue, I think mostly because of the changing corporate and financial climate they had to operate in.

Too expensive to produce at a time when the world economy was taking a downturn. Otherwise, the best devices made for audio.

IIRC, it was more like they were too expensive to produce as compared to the much cheaper to produce and very nice for audio BJT's and MOSFET's that were coming on the market at the time.

Otherwise, the best devices made for audio.
Yes indeed!
