Shure 8x stylus

I found a loose NOS Shure 8X stylus without a cart. It was in a little stylus box with no markings. It looks to be in good shape. What cartridge does this mate with? Thanks!

I believe it's the Shure M75, or the Realistic R1000EDT. Tracking force is 0.75 - 1.50 grams. Wish I could find one of those!

The 8X stylus along with the 5X and 3X are for the later R1000XT, R47XT and R25XT cartridges, among other, but not the M75 or EDT series

Is the R1000XT or others listed worth finding for the stylus? What was the general consensus of the the 8X?

Shure's big 2004 stylus replacement chart (available on the kabusa.com site as a pdf) is normally extremely handy, but it's confusing on this one. The stylus is basically a Shure N95ED, and was originally sold with the Realistic (Radio Shack) R1000XT, which was based on the Shure M95 while looking nothing like it at first glance. Earlier R1000s were based on the M75, thus the confusion.

The stylus will fit nearly any non-V15 Shure cartridge whose body shell is v-bottomed (and several that aren't, as tubewade points out in the next post)-- the only exceptions I can think of are the Era IV p-mounts and the rare M24H. This means any cartridge based on the M95 and M97, and that includes the current M97xE and M92E. In other words, a lot of Shure cartridges! No need to search out the R1000XT.

It is part of the Premier or NDC line-up, which were house branded cartridges, many for Realistic. It is an M95 generator in a special body that stops you from using N95 styli. Radio Shack sold those styli as replacements for all of their M75 cartridges (EDs) in addition to their XTs and I used those for years on M75s.
What wualta said about finding an original R1000XT. The problem with the 8X stylus is it has the huge Mexican made cantilever. The tip is a 0.2 x 0.7, so pretty high level, but it is bonded, not nude and the cantilever is larger than I'd like. Try it and see what you think of it. It'll fit just about any Shure cartridge other than some of the V15s.

Yes, they are good cartridges and worth looking for. I think the 8X was top of the line in that series. You can install it in the R25XT, R47XT or R1000xt.

Mmmmm that would be Ne95ED, probably the only difference is stylus grip color.........it will fit into and play fine in 75 bodies, 91 bodies, the square bottom Realistic, the V bottom such at the 47X
it will plug into the M95 body, etc etc etc .

Nice stylus...........especially plugged into the 75-91 bodies.

My bad. My R1000EDT came with a RS8T stylus. I also have an R1000XT. Guess I got confused. Anyway, either one is well worth having.

Yes, the R8X is the same as the Ne95ED (yellow grip) which is still available at LP Gear.

This came with a table I just bought. The cart says realistic R1000E. Glad to see this is good equipment.

Slick lookin' cart. Radio Shack's version of the Shure M91ED, but of course you can put lots of styli in it, from the N91 family to the N75 family to the N95 family and its many derivatives (as in your photo), and more besides. The R1000ED, which came later (see the 1980 catalog), has a white body and is M75-based.
