Skyfall

Very true. While I was sort of expecting it, it held real emotional content both for M and Bond. I just wish they had written more of that in previous Bond films.
Honestly I feel as though some parts of hollywood still believe that there are people who do want more than blood baths or "chick flicks", that a good story can go hand in hand with fun and action, etc. Old days it really was all about ticket sales. Perfect example is the total butcher job of the Von Trapp family. Had "Sound of Music" been done true to the story it likely would have bombed big time.

I think the writing in the old days just wasn't as creative and the studios likely didn't care. That might be why some people cling to the old Bond brand, they may be more attached to that "form" of movie and not that the actors or actresses were any better. Just picked up "Octopussy" on Blu-ray and totally enjoyed it. I didn't feel like critiquing the movie and that is why, likely, I had fun watching it. I think "Moonraker" was the first Bond movie I saw in the theater, so Blu-ray on a 60" is giving an experience I hadn't had prior, so all good.

Exactly. They are turning the most popular character in movie history into something different. I really enjoyed the Bourne movies. I enjoyed Smiley and Flint and Matt Helm. But I don't want Bond to become any one of them.

Spoiler alert!!

I HATED what they did to his DB5 in Skyfall. For no apparent purpose.

Well, it is pretty well shot up, but not blown up IIRC, so it could be repaired. I so wanted him to turn the car around with the bulletproof screen up, and fire out some oil with a quick match (flamethrower if you will).

What bothered me a bit was the fact that at that point, James could have called in practically anyone within the MI6 fraternity to provide armament, people, etc. A package or arms cache could have been airdropped (or FedEx'ed?), he could have stopped off at practically any site with weapons before reaching Skyfall.

Sure it makes it seem more dramatic, but he was thinking he'd be able to hold them off with his father's gun collection? And couldn't they have gone to any town nearby to buy weapons?

Sure, its a new world, but don't make it so unrealistic.

Yup. The story was incredibly weak at that point. And contrived. And actually really stupid. Going unarmed to his ancestral home was somehow a good plan?

But the Aston was totally destroyed. Nothing left to rebuild. Maybe they can have the bad guy burn the Mona Lisa in the next one.

Yup, worst movie of the decade. We can only hope there will not be another one. God save the Queen! Pip Pip

'Skyfall' is the best Bond movie!

I've re-watched 'Skyfall' couple nights ago, about four times now that I've seen it (on Blu-ray), and I truly believe that it is the best James Bond 007 movie yet.

I could probably write a book about it, but I won't.

The director, Sam Mendes did the best job so far; with his team, with the choice of actors (femme fatale, villains, Q, M, Eve, ...) their directions, the music score, the locales, the action scenes, cinematography, the storyline, and all that 007 jazz. :thmbsp:

Oh, and Daniel Craig is splendid (acting) in it! ...He's the best Bond 007 with a licence to kill.
Can't wait for the next 50 years.

Well, I didn't get that at all. The Aston was an anachronism from movie made 40+ years earlier, and all I can see its' purpose really was was to add to the break from the past. There was really zero reason for it to be there at all...:yes:

New Q, new M, new Moneypenny, new car, Bond 24 should be quite interesting...

Moonraker was the low point....

I almost said Moonraker, but at least that was kinda silly fun. It was played for laughs, A View to a Kill was just embarrassing though. And likely had the all time worst Bond girl too. I thought Tanya Roberts was hot until that movie.

Personally, I think A Quantum of Solace was the low point (outside of the David Niven Casino Royale spoof). I liked the Daniel Craig movies before and after QoS, but I honestly cannot remember a thing about QoS. Not a thing.

Random thoughts:
- A new M and a new Moneypenny? Of course Skyfall is a reboot;
- Moore never really played Bond. He played The Saint, but just called the character James Bond;
- I always thought of Pierce Bronsan as the Drew Bledsoe of the Bond series. Did a perfectly admirable job, but when they realized that they had Tom Brady in the lineup, they benched Bledsoe and put it Brady. That makes Daniel Craig the Bond Tom Brady: in the discussion for the best Bond ever, and it really comes down to Craig and Connery (with a few radical votes for Dalton). That would make Sean Connery into Joe Montana, or maybe Johnny Unitas.

There is a very cute actress in it, plus an excellent action scene when Bond and one villain fall though a glass roof dome (very cool photographic shots on that one). :thmbsp:

Connery = Joe Namath.

Not the best actor (or QB) but they made a legend with a somewhat limited skill set.
They both got the hottest girls, and people are still talking about them 40 years later.

It should be humour, but I'm schizophrenic when it comes to language now, don't know which way to spell things anymore.

What does it mean?

Cheerio means goodbye, I don't know what Pip pip means..

You may as well throw a "Tally ho" in their too.

Pip Pip, old Bean!! :D

"Mock-pompous English greeting which conveys jocular familiarity on the recipient. Sometimes used in conjunction with "What ho!" and "Old bean" for maximum effect."

Personally, I like Brosnan's take on 007. I think he did a very good job with what he was given, and that was the problem - he wasn't given that much "character" script to work with. I was fine with his physicality when it was called for, but I felt his intellect and knowledge helped get him out of situations just as much as strength. As I said earlier, if given a meatier script, he could still do a great Bond, and one who deals with aging as a secret agent, IF the producers and scriptwriters didn't bombard it with one-liners, and too much comedy as in the previous films.

I felt Goldeneye was a great "reboot" for Brosnan although the story threat was much like "Diamonds are Forever". But a great intro to Dame Judy Dench as M, and a curious connection with Bond.

Bill Tanner: Seems your hunch was right, 007. It's too bad the Evil Queen of Numbers wouldn't let you play it...
[M walks in]
M: You were saying?
Bill Tanner: No, no, I was just... just um...
M: Good. Because if I want sarcasm, Mr Tanner, I'll talk to my children, thank you very much.

M: You don't like me, Bond. You don't like my methods. You think I'm an accountant, a bean counter more interested in my numbers than your instincts.
James Bond: The thought had occurred to me.
M: Good, because I think you're a sexist, misogynist dinosaur. A relic of the Cold War, whose boyish charms, though wasted on me, obviously appealed to that young woman I sent out to evaluate you.
James Bond: Point taken.

Damn good trailer for the late 90's:

And the scene on the train, fun stuff IMO.

Moonraker was the low point....

Nah, the low point was the TWO films with the Louisiana Sheriff playing a BAD Jackie Gleason wanna-be from the Smokey and the Bandit franchise ...
Live and let Die ... and The Man with the Golden Gun - retch!!
