Skylab's "Vintage" Rig

Thanks! They are solid walnut. I looked a long time for a set of stands I really liked and finally found them :D

Where they made specifically for the HPM100s? Who makes them and where can I find them? I was going to attempt a home build, but as I discovered, solid walnut is NOT cheap!

No it was just a very fortuitous find. Got them on eBay. The guy said he was going to sell more, but I've never seen any others from him.

Speaker change!!!! I finally scored some DSS-9's. Been after these quite a while!

Thanks! They were mid-1980's. They sound great! I'm a big fan of Pioneer's Beryllium ribbon tweeters. And these were right up there in terms of designs that used them.

Mine are actually the magnetically shielded version which was badged CS-V900D, but completely identical to the DSS-9 other than the added advantage of having a shielded woofer, which also ironically mine don't have since the pair I got had shot woofer surrounds. So the current woofers are actually DSS-9 woofers! It's a dual-voice-coil woofer though so it's a big of a unique thing.

Skylab, any chance you'll be doing full user reviews of these DSS-9s as well as your new S-1010s? I for one would enjoy reading it.

Wow, another pair of Pioneer Beryllium speakers. The next thing you will be posting is that you sold your big B&W's and bought a new pair of TAD's.

LOL! It wouldn't be that crazy :D

I should do a write up on the DSS-9 and S-1010 and compare to the HPM-100 and 1100. Will try to find the time...

Would be cool to read, especially your comparisons in the bottom end dept. While the S-1010 looks beefy due to its configuration, my guess is the HPM1100 can produce a lower, deeper bottom end with a 15" transducer.

There is no doubt about that. The S-1010's looks are deceiving. The big cone being a passive radiation, even though the 1010 is almost exactly the same size as the HPM-1100, the 1100 has significantly more bass output. I'm not sure that the 1100 goes any deeper, though. In my room, it didn't seem to. The 1010's bass is also very noticeably tighter. The 1100 is an excellent speaker, but unless you are after massive bass output as your primary goal, the 1010 is better in pretty much every other dimension.

The short story for the DSS-9 is the same vis-a-vis the HPM-100 - I like the HPM-100 overall, but the DSS-9 is better in every regard. I think the HPM-100 actually may go a tiny bit deeper in the bass, but the DSS-9 has every bit as much bass, and the quality of the bass is better. And the mids, highs, and sound staging are much better with the DSS-9.
