Snare drums!

Steve Gadd has one of the driest snare drum sounds in the industry. It would be my opinion that Gadd is one of the few who can make a dry snare drum sound interesting. It works for his technique....which very, very few can copy.

Right... Certainly-not Dennis Chambers (who sounds too-much-like himself to bother imitating other drummers).

One of my all-time favorites is Buddy Rich. He was a true master of the instrument. He was so-good that he overshadowed any bandleader he worked with, plus he was such a personality (and a hardass). An epic drummer with a devastating attack. THE best IMO.

Peter Erskine is amazing. Danny Gottlieb is great (I met him once and got to hang and watch him play... He was playing in a band with Pete Levin, Tony Levin's brother). Rod Morgenstein, Ian Paice, etc. Lou Reed played with a great drummer back in '74. Can't remember his name. Lots of forgotten greats. Micky Waller, Cozy Powell, etc.

One of my favorite snare sounds is really one of the least snare-sounding snares out there....Danny Carey of Tool and his Ocheltree Spirit of 2002 bronze snare. Eight inches of depth gives it plenty of body and the bronze construction gives it tons of tone and the high tuning provides incredible cutting power. He often plays with the snares off so it's much more timbale-like than snare. Carey has a very similar approach to the kit as Cobham as they are both very physical players so they have a very prominent snare in their recordings. Through the Altec 19's or QLS-1's Danny's snares are NRA worthy.

simply beautiful coming from the aiwa SC E50Y sorry got carried away with the videos but i think you will like them all.

YES! Another one with great snare technique and a great sound to go with it. Does it get any funkier than Garibaldi? Yes it does....Mike Clark. Just listened to him with Richie Goods and Nuclear Fusion Live at the Zinc Bar. AWESOME!!

awright i just copied that Richie Goods, gonna give it a spin in the morning. yea Mike Clark is also a killer, the headhunters would have been unstopable if they had stayed together but thats the music biz in a nutshell, blackbyrd went on to be George Clintons band leader.he was my fav guitarist for a long time.

The drum intro to The Camera Eye by Rush sounds phenomenal.

I think a lot good sounding snare drum recording has to do with tuning and the way they mic it and mix it. There are too many recordings out there with the drums pushed a bit too far down in the mix.

Personally, of the few snare drums that I have owned this has been the best sounding of them. It's also pretty easy on the eyes. :D

That and Red Barchetta are probably my favorite tunes on Moving Pictures. I used to use Camera Eye for system tests....probably need to start breaking it out again. Great snare sound on that album...if memory serves me correctly Neil was using some fairly generic maple Slingerland.

And that Tama of yours is a friggin' beautiful drum. Can't hardly go wrong with tobacco burst and black nickel.

Buddy Rich - Live On King Street. His kit sounds amazing on my Focal 826Vs. Of course, so do the saxes, horns, piano ....

My friend Bruce Gary killed it with the kick n' snare on this hit(and most other times).
RIP, Bruce.

Great player, great touch, and the perfect sound for that band. I have a number of LPs and LDs mounted up around my studio walls, and many musicians have come through and questioned why the Knack album is up with all of them...his playing just makes me smile, and serves the songs.

Sorry for your loss, and all of ours.

2 more legends

these 2 guys imo do better in a band situation were they can drive the beat.but this is the only footage i could find wit both together.still some damn good drumming more on the showboat side though. i played these through my ar ps 225's and they sounded Crystal clear with all frequencies hitting good.

imo there are a lot of good drummers some stand out more than others but my idea of a good al purpose drummer is someone that stays in the pocket and opens up the sound of the whole band.
