Sobriety, something new for me...

Mister Tawny

Crazed afficianado
Anyway after a decade of hard drinking, tonight marks the 3rd night of sobriety. I tried AA and it didn't work for me. But for now I'll see if I can find the path to make it stick. Nothing earth shattering for the rest of you, but for me it's a big deal. Anyone with any advice is greatly appreciated.....

Well, I have no advice, but I will offer some encouragement! Keep it up, just keep your goal and the benefits in mind! We're all pulling for you! :thmbsp:

I was at a father and son banquet tonight with my dad and brother. The speaker talked about how addictions can control peoples lives. One of them was alcohol addiction but all addictions are related in a way. Statistically speaking 99 percent of people have some type of addiction believe it or not. Some are worse than others but all can control your life in a way.

Keep yourself busy and have a goal. Decide what you want to accomplish and stick to it. Stay away from public and private places where there is alcohol. Anything that might trigger the urge to go back. Just don't do it if that's what you really want. Just keep thinking of the goal you have set for yourself.

God bless,

Denny

Good Luck. It's easy to give advice but it's up to you.

I try to be inspired by others who have overcome huge obstacles. Through history folks have struggled. But through sacrifice, self-denial and determination they have come out on top.
You can do ANYTHING you want if you REALLY want to.
One thing I can say for sure, after a few months you will find that life is a high all by itself, and the booze just gets in the way.

Good for you, and good luck.

For me, dealing with bad habits is a matter of reminding myself why I wanted to get away from it in the first place, and finding other better ways to spend my time. Break old habits and replace them with new habits. It isn't easy.

13 years sober here. It is one day at a time, sometimes minute by minute. Always remind yourself about why you NEED or HAVE to quit. Good luck and we are here for you. It took me many tries and many hard times to realize that only YOU can make this happen but don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it and like the others said, stay away from those places and bad habit environments.

I know what you mean about AA, it's not for everyone. But you really should try to "take what you need & leave the rest", meaning listen hard for the wisdom, because it's definitely there, but leave the bull that some people hand out. Good luck to ya, but you'll need to work on it, it doesn't come easy.

All worthy endeavors in life are difficult, and yours will be. Stay focused and on task and you will succeed, and find all kinds of things to do to fill all the new time you have on your hands!
Best of luck,
Jim

I have a good friend who had a serious drinking problem. He found his own path, perhaps not unlike your approach, and has been sober for 7 years plus now. I hope you make it.

Congratulations. You have more company than you can imagine! ( I used to think everybody drank like me). I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you what's worked for me, one day at a time, for years. PM me if you want to talk.

Good for you MT! 3-days of sobriety is a big a deal as 3-years or 30-years.

Congratulations on your accomplishment and dedication thus far  I know it's not easy, but if you can get your head right place and find a way to keep it there your good. I might still look into some group that is kinda of like AA but for individuals like yourself that haven't found that AA works for them.

Flying solo is do-able, but much easier with support from "friends" :thmbsp:

God Bless you my friend!.....Recently sober myself. As stated you are not alone in this. Hang in there, this is a simply a one day at time thing. I am always available if you need someone to talk at, rant or whatever. PM me anytime you feel like talking. There are more than a few of who have chosen this path.

Congratulations and good luck. Getting into a good exercise routine may prove helpful. Another thing - don't drink alcohol-free beer. It's so insipid, it'll just make you want the real thing even more (I learned this while I was on some medication that didn't mix with alcohol).

Have faith in yourself. Try to replace it with something else you can do routinely every day for a good hour. Something easy to start like a walk or hike. You can always change it.
