Soft Market

This tells me how soft the market is. Originally posted 24 days ago, although the price may have been higher then. No affiliation.

A lot of what drives desirability of vintage items is their desirability when you were a kid and they were new. I think we're reaching a point where gear made in the early 1970's and earlier -- particularly with a design aesthetic from the 1960's or early 1970's, like this Sansui -- is too old to trigger the youthful nostalgia that drives prices up. Good tube gear remains popular -- because tubes -- but for many, early transistor gear is starting to look more old than desirable.

Not buying into the sellers ad . . could be a scammer harvesting emails or it could be sold and the ad is still up. The 5000a is a highly desirable unit.

If legit, $80 is a great deal, and then update the boards to bring it up to the 5000x and should be a great set up...

Being in Boulder Colorado, I'd check the serial # with detective Fiegel. It may have been sent there for a restore and sold to an unsuspecting individual before scumbag Schumacher got busted. Or it may not.

Same phenomenon is taking place in collector car markets. '65 Tri-Power GTOs are being passed over for late '70s Trans-Ams with the disco chicken on the hood and other tape-stripe specials of the era.

It's just the changing of the guard.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I really don't have the time to do anything other than hook it up, plug it in and listen. Got about a years worth of remodeling to do before I can sell and hopefully retire. Maybe.

I already have an AU-919 for my office system. The 5000 will be for the garage system. I also have a SX-1010 that probably only needs the power supply rebuilt and a good deoxit. But it just sits there, for now. :(

Took about two months to sell our original owner 5000 in near perfect condition, with case, all documents including manuals, brochures etc., with the updated (5031?) boards installed by a Sansui dealer and documented, ... for $80.

The problem isn't as much that they're not attractive or not a nice sounding unit, but that they made a ton of 5000, 5000A, & 5000x receivers so there's not as much demand as supply. It's also about as expensive to buy the parts for a restoration as it is worth when you're finished, ... so you better like it a lot.

If that is true, the 5000A might not be the unit for you. There is a well known problem with the first generation driver boards that can and from what I read sometimes does cause a fire.

When vintage tube units in mint condition start languishing unsold for a few hundred, then I'll start to worry. :D
