Soft Market

Took about two months to sell our original owner 5000 in near perfect condition, with case, all documents including manuals, brochures etc., with the updated (5031?) boards installed by a Sansui dealer and documented, ... for $80.

The problem isn't as much that they're not attractive or not a nice sounding unit, but that they made a ton of 5000, 5000A, & 5000x receivers so there's not as much demand as supply. It's also about as expensive to buy the parts for a restoration as it is worth when you're finished, ... so you better like it a lot.
I'm not concerned about resale value as it will probably be given away (with a set of speakers) at some point. Don't plan on restoring it either. I plan on using and hopefully enjoying it until it's given away, or it dies. Even if it dies in a few months, for the price, it won't be a big deal. I've made much bigger, far more costly mistakes in my life. If this is another mistake, it will fall somewhere near the bottom of the list.
There is a well known problem with the first generation driver boards that can and from what I read sometimes does cause a fire.
The garage system is plugged into a power strip which is turned off when not in use. It's only in use when I'm in the garage (and I have a fire extinguisher handy ;)).

I did have a Palm Pilot explode and catch fire (due to a faulty replacement battery) while recharging on my desk, many years ago. Fortunately, I was home at the time. Shook me up a bit though.

High class for a garage I say. My 5000A runs cool so far. Some were built with the fixed boards.
But I don't leave it unattended.

A friend of mine bought one from the record store we both go to a few months back. This one lit up and caught fire in his house, lucky nothing bad happened to his home.

Yeah right next to the gas can, it's no joke they do light up. These units are getting very old and need service get a AVR for the garage if your not going to do anything with it.

I had my Pioneer SX-1010 out there for quite a while, till my Sansui died. (Getting it back next week ) Prior to the 1010, was using a Pioneer SX-850. Currently using a Denon PMA-920 (in the garage).

I probably wouldn't have even considered the 5000A except that my Onkyo tuner is giving me issues, and I do like to listen to the semi-local jazz station.

OK, I give. Not gonna take the chance.

Thanks to all for the warnings.
I'm finding more and more vintage frying lately. 1975 Vintage caps where old in the mid 90s, by the mid 2000s you could still get away without restoring and use them. Today they just fail and fry the unit, we can't just ignore it any longer. Look at your other Sansui you just posted, so you know the reality.

I did recap the Sansui and the 850 when I first bought them, several years ago. However, at present, I just don't have the time to do any restoration work. If I did, I'd buy the 5000 and do what needed to be done.

Hey I totally understand and why I have newer equipment for my main system, I like it working. I got tired of stuff not working after a little while, I can't fix it so it's just more money. I also don't have time even if things just need light service and cleaning.

Or you could pull the cover and see what boards it has. May have come with the good ones or they were replaced.
The seller told me that he is a tech, and had to repair it when he first got it. That being the case, since he didn't mention anything about the infamous boards, I doubt they are the good ones. Maybe why it's been listed for so long, and so cheap. I will call him tomorrow and ask.

I'm rapidly getting to that point myself. I picked up a Rotel RX-1052 a while back, in a package deal, and it's so nice to have decent amp that I shouldn't have to worry about for a while. And, unlike my vintage stuff, it has a remote. :)

The Sansui (AU-919) I HAD to get repaired. Relatively inexpensive repair from what the tech told me (pre amp output transistors). The SX-1010, I'll at least recap the power supply, at some point. Maybe. Probably? Might sell it too. Don't know.
Other than those, I think I'm done with vintage. This old man has too many other things to do with what time I have left.

Age in old ss gear is why I no longer seek them out.I'm pretty sure everything I have found in the last ten years made before 1972 needed work. Most recently I found a Sansui Model 2000 circa 1968.Stiff controls, burned out dial lights and minor static out of one channel that a deox did not clear.I only paid $3 at a church sale and the static aside it sure does sound nice but I'm not putting a nickel in it.Ebay or CL as a parts unit is where this is headed. This sounded so good I was tempted to look for a working ebay unit but I remember ...their old and if it doesn't need work now...it will eventually.

Well.......................I done dood it. Checked, and it has the good boards.

Took me a few to get used to the sound. It's quite different from the Denon. At first, I thought it sounded thinner. However, after listening to a few well known cuts, I've decided that it's more accurate and detailed. I'm hearing things in my Norman 8's that I never noticed before using the Denon. What little I've tried so far (FM, tape 1 out and aux) seem to work just fine. FM reception is a little better than I was getting with the Onkyo. I think it's a keeper.

New boards. I'm a little surprised. You describe the sound I expected. Capably dynamic across the board. Should light up the garage just fine.

A Sansui 5000A for $80? What a steal! You must have good karma. My 5000A also has F-6013 driver boards just like my 5000X.
